Goodbye Richie Sexson

posted by on July 10 at 10:54 AM

From the Seattle Times:

The Mariners released first baseman Richie Sexson today. The move was announced by Lee Pelekoudas, the team’s vice president and general manager.

“We felt that at this time it was in the best interest of the ballclub, and in Richie’s best interest, to make this move” Pelekoudas said.

50 mil down the toilet. Are the Mariners trying to channel the Sonics?

Too bad. I was rooting for the big guy to get it going...for a long time. He's just looked puzzled up there for two seasons. McLaren getting canned didn't bode well for the prediction that Richie would be the comeback player of the year.

I agree with the quote that it's in Richie's best interest. At this point, that's gotta be a tough job to get fired up to go to every day. Time for a little vacay.

In advance: Fuck everyone who's going to say yadda yadda about rich baseball players and yadda yadda 15 million. We all know that already. I'm rooting for the guy, not worrying about his pile of money. I would have wanted him to do well if he was making Felix coins.

Fnarf will say he was a terrible baseball first baseman. Maybe there's a graph somewhere that says that. But I watch or listen to basically every game and Richie is solid. Plus I bet there's a graph out there somewhere on how many assists he's gotten his infielders simply due to the big-man stretch.

Good luck Richie.

Still your fan,
Lloyd

Yes, yes, and yes. I was expecting him to "turn it around soon, maybe next week/month" x months ago, x-1 months ago, ..., x-y months ago at which point I grew a little impatient.

I'll be happy when they shitcan Jose Vidro. Sexson was no good, but Vidro is even worse, if you can believe it.

Sexson was a godawful defensive first baseman, Lloyd -- the worst in the game (except on days when Cairo is playing there). Yes, he was tall, but for every extra high ball he caught he let twelve go through into the outfield. He no range at all.

And he couldn't hit; he was done two years ago.

I won't say a bad word against the man, because I don't know him. But I'm glad to see him off of this team.

And of course Miguel Cairo IS the new first baseman, and will be sharing time there with Jose Vidro, who is the WORST PLAYER IN ALL OF BASEBALL.

Don't let the door swing and miss you on the way out

Hah, good one, proof.

12 to 1, Fnarf, is, well, I enjoyed the exaggeration. Thanks for the chuckle. Ben Broussard as a choice on the All-Star ballot gave me the same kind of wiggles in mah tummy. I'm gonna miss Steinbacher's sports posts.

There is no upgrade at first for the M's. They have no depth. Lahair? All season, they've have a weirdly-composed roster. And let's lay that blame where it belongs: At Mike Morse's feet.

I'm not going to argue your points about Cairo or Vidro, though I think they bring some fire mixed with ease and confidence, which is good for any ball club, but especially for a bad ball club. It is what it is right now. You know, you look at guys like Betancourt and Lopez and their problems are completely mental. They lack focus. Richie just looked plain sullen. But whatevs.

Platoon Willie at first and bring Balentien back up and let the kid get some more games under his belt.

R.A Dickey has saved this season for me, personally. Your shat-ass record becomes much less important when your team has a knuckle-baller.

"Richie is solid."

Huh? come on Lloyd, if i didnt know any better i would think youre secretely cheering for that tampa bay team.

No secret, SeMe. I can name the roster, bench and bullpen. Years past, too. Lou for Randy Winn is where it started for me.

If the Rays can avoid those 10-game losing streaks in the second half, they've got a good chance to hang in there.

The Rays are a kickass team, and one of the best-run franchises out there. There isn't a player on our team I'd take in a head-to-head trade, I don't think. Look what they've done with a tiny fraction of the resources. Smart, smart baseball team.

Richie is gone, who is next?
I am not a big Seattle Mariners Fan.
I am not from the area and I promised myself I would give this whole Mariners thing a try.
It didn't work.

But I am surprised for a town that bitches about the Sonics leaving and the Mariners sucking.. Where the fuck are you on game day?
I come from a town where until a few years ago, losing was the norm. And no I am not from Fucking Boston! Fuck them!

Richie was a casualty of poor management decisions, yes he got paid a lot but I bet you he is more sad to leave because as an athlete he has failed then he is to leave a bunch of wanna-be fans who only show up when it's going well.

Here is some advice.

Show up to the game and demand a good product.. Because if you don't we'll be stuck with two empty stadiums... And then we'll have to rally around the real winners in this town. Storm and Sounders.. both gone soon...

People are voting with their feet, Joossie. Why should I give them money when they suck this bad? If people go to the games, they're telling management "we don't care if you win or lose". I want to win.

The M's have a free stadium and one of the best revenue streams in baseball -- we are one of the richest clubs in the game. If they can't win with that, fuck 'em.

I personally wish that fewer than 100 people would go to their remaining games, until Chuck Armstrong and Howard Lincoln are forced to clean out their desks. FUCK THEM.
