Ahhh, yes -- the Siegesaule, Siegesaule happens to be name of the local Berlin gay rag, too.

It's base is composed of bas relief images of the Franco-Prussian war, all shot to hell during the final days of May 1945. Tunnels run beneath it, exiting above ground at little palladian structures designed under the watchful eye of Albert Speer. These are also shot full of holes, and patched with all different color of granite and marble.

I hope Obama will use this opportunity to speak of the days when America brought hope and light to the world -- Kennedy for sure, and -- say what you will -- Reagan in an anti-Communist sense. "Americans, great and small, have acted in the best of interests of freedom in this city, and, because of this, served as the hope of the world. I look forward to a day when I, as president, can continue to build on this proud tradition." IOW, don't knock Bush or fall into the trap of "America isn't great right now." Just speak of how great it can be.

Carry on.

I wonder what will happen when Obama gives a speech demanding a final solution for Germany's Jewish problem or how the German people are entitled to control over all of Europe. I'd watch this speech!!

it is a lot to live up to, but it's much better to start out with a little international credit. obama, despite the diplomatic hole the us is in, seems to be well respected already, and he hasn't even done anything. that's a pretty solid place to start from if you want to reforge damaged alliances around the world.

From the washingtonpost:
"Has there ever been a presidential nominee with a wider gap between his estimation of himself and the sum total of his lifetime achievements?

Obama is a three-year senator without a single important legislative achievement to his name, a former Illinois state senator who voted "present" nearly 130 times. As president of the Harvard Law Review, as law professor and as legislator, has he ever produced a single notable piece of scholarship? Written a single memorable article? His most memorable work is a biography of his favorite subject: himself.

It is a subject upon which he can dilate effortlessly. . ."

@8: i'll take that over a senile adulterer with PTSD & anger-management issues anyday. or a drug-addled narcissist walking definition of nepotism.

the issue is: do you TRUST him to make decisions? i do. for now.

@8,

Thanks for quoting Charles Krauthammer and not attributing the quotation.

Jackass.

@8 - remember Odrama's big accomplishment by voting for FISA recently? I hope the German press make that little fact be known to their people.

@11,
My post said it's from washingtonpost and they're in quotation. Chill out moron

@13,

Not good enough. You're quoting a right wing columnist who supports McCain. Attributing it to the Post alone makes the quotation out to be real journalism, which it's not.

As I said, jackass.

@14,
By your logic only left wing columnist who supports Obambi constitutes "real journalism" ? Everyone has an opinion and assho_le like yours. Like i said moron

"...as he fights back against the concept that he’s a blank slate on which people project their hopes..."

What? Obama is not fighting back against that concept. His entire election strategy is based on that concept! If he has any sense, he'll continue to exploit it to the hilt, then proceed to be the kind of do-nothing-but-look-fabulous president that JFK was.

The Kennedy speech wasn't even at the Brandenburg Gate, which takes a little wind out of his critics' sails. And of course Merkel's going to criticize Obama. She's pretty good friends with Bush, despite what people might think from the footage of her reaction to Bush giving her a surprise massage.

Oh this does not bode well. The Europeans loved John Kerry, especially the Germans.

*shaking*

Please, please, please....let him be popular there and here.

duwadi @8, @13, @15, I don't quite understand why you should be so reluctant to cite Charles Krauthammer by name. As long as you agree with his views, why be ashamed of him?

Let's face it, though, Krauthammer & Co.'s only prayer this election cycle is character assassination. (Well, that and an appeal to fear and inertia and any other hot buttons in the reptilian parts of our brains.) When it comes to the Republicans' record or the state of this nation or any of the major issues confronting this country, Obama has McCain whupped. And you know it.

The fact the polls are still so close is an indication that psychology may still triumph over policy. So I can understand why the conservative commentariat is going to turn into almost a satire of itself this year.

A friend of mine, who was very pro-bama in the primaries is upset about the whole FISA thing and said recently, "I think Obama blew his popularity load too early". I tend to agree.

Makes me very nervous about November. As I stated during the primaries, we just don't know all the stuff that will come out about Obama and his past. We also could not have predicted the FISA vote, or any future blunders.

And now the young people so enamoured with him are already becoming dissolutioned. And it's not even August. Christ.

The Victory Tower is probably not the best choice. He should have gone for the old Check Point Charlie site or better yet Templehof airport to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Airlift.
Maybe not a good thing to have a charismatic leader hold a huge rally in Berlin. It inevitably invites comparison to David Hasselhof.

But Obama's not about the past, Zander.

He's about the future.

Learn it. Love it. Live it.

the liberal media already voted for obama, now they follow him like little puppies. if he is elected the press will give him a pass on all the mistakes he will probly make due to his inexperience. i have never seen a more bias organization as the main stream media, its as if they have their own political party. i have always wondered where the radicals we are the world group went after the 60's. now all of us americans must listen and read the baloney that will be pushed on us by a elitist group of know it all journalist and commentators who will be in their glory with their leader obama at the helm. i as an american will give him respect as our countries leader unlike the so called liberal progress types who claim to love our free speech and use it to their advantage only, all the rest of us will now have to hear their merciless rantings for possibly 8 yrs. this too shall pass. god bless america.
