Slog - Comments on Germany Prepares For Obama-mania

Der Spiegel reports (and this helpful fellow translates/summarizes) that the authorities in Berlin are preparing for a crowd of up to one million people anxious to get a glimpse of Obama when his world tour touches down in Germany. Authorities in Berlin are preparing for a million spectators, which would instantly make Obama's speech the biggest political event in that country since unification in 1990. There are even plans to close down the street, a mile long, and replicate the setup during the World Cup with massive projection screens. Inevitably with a political earthquake of this magnitude, there's some controversy...

Comment by Jubilation T. Cornball

Ahhh, yes -- the Siegesaule, Siegesaule happens to be name of the local Berlin gay rag, too.

It's base is composed of bas relief images of the Franco-Prussian war, all shot to hell during the final days of May 1945. Tunnels run beneath it, exiting above ground at little palladian structures designed under the watchful eye of Albert Speer. These are also shot full of holes, and patched with all different color of granite and marble.

I hope Obama will use this opportunity to speak of the days when America brought hope and light to the world -- Kennedy for sure, and -- say what you will -- Reagan in an anti-Communist sense. "Americans, great and small, have acted in the best of interests of freedom in this city, and, because of this, served as the hope of the world. I look forward to a day when I, as president, can continue to build on this proud tradition." IOW, don't knock Bush or fall into the trap of "America isn't great right now." Just speak of how great it can be.

Carry on.

it is a lot to live up to, but it's much better to start out with a little international credit. obama, despite the diplomatic hole the us is in, seems to be well respected already, and he hasn't even done anything. that's a pretty solid place to start from if you want to reforge damaged alliances around the world.

From the washingtonpost:
"Has there ever been a presidential nominee with a wider gap between his estimation of himself and the sum total of his lifetime achievements?

Obama is a three-year senator without a single important legislative achievement to his name, a former Illinois state senator who voted "present" nearly 130 times. As president of the Harvard Law Review, as law professor and as legislator, has he ever produced a single notable piece of scholarship? Written a single memorable article? His most memorable work is a biography of his favorite subject: himself.

It is a subject upon which he can dilate effortlessly. . ."

What? Obama is not fighting back against that concept. His entire election strategy is based on that concept! If he has any sense, he'll continue to exploit it to the hilt, then proceed to be the kind of do-nothing-but-look-fabulous president that JFK was.

duwadi @8, @13, @15, I don't quite understand why you should be so reluctant to cite Charles Krauthammer by name. As long as you agree with his views, why be ashamed of him?

Let's face it, though, Krauthammer & Co.'s only prayer this election cycle is character assassination. (Well, that and an appeal to fear and inertia and any other hot buttons in the reptilian parts of our brains.) When it comes to the Republicans' record or the state of this nation or any of the major issues confronting this country, Obama has McCain whupped. And you know it.

The fact the polls are still so close is an indication that psychology may still triumph over policy. So I can understand why the conservative commentariat is going to turn into almost a satire of itself this year.

Makes me very nervous about November. As I stated during the primaries, we just don't know all the stuff that will come out about Obama and his past. We also could not have predicted the FISA vote, or any future blunders.
