Slog - Comments on Fun House

Why? Why show you this house in Leytron, Switzerland? Because you need a good laugh. Not sure if that was the designer's intention, but the result (the ultimate matter) of the effort/concept/vision is funny....

For someone who claims to hate the country and love the city, Charles sure is attracted to houses and other buildings way out in the sticks, unsurrounded by any kind of urbanity at all.

That's not funny. This is funny:

So the Robie House walks into a bar. It sits down.

"Something wrong, pal?" the bartender asks the Robie House.

"No," says the Robie House.

"Well then," says the bartender, "why the long face?"

Ba-dum-bum.

Comment by Grant Cogswell

I spent most of my teens in a house that looked a lot like this, in Buckinghamshire. Some nutjob had built a development of these 'Swiss' houses around the base of a hill in the early 70s. The crazy roofline is to deal with massive amounts of snow. It doesn't snow in massive amounts in Buckinghamshire, but does just enough to make it hard in the winter for a car to climb a long, steep driveway that was the only egress from each house to a street that for no apparent reason was at the TOP of the hill - surrounded by these houses. Now THAT was funny, but not particularly if you had to dig out that driveway and keep it gritted and salted.

the nunatak project is a riff on the existing landscape...

at least it's responding to something, other than itself... and the interior is rather interesting, sectionally.

"the result (the ultimate matter)"? really? in case we didn't know what "the result" meant?

i admit it, i actively look for the inanity in charles's posts because it cheers me up.

@18:

that slope is probably fine. any slope helps, but it's certainly not meant to shed snow as a steep pitch would.

i have no doubt it's engineered for a heavy snow load, although with the presence of grape vines in the yard, its not in switzerland's alpine regions.
