TV Eureka Yesterday: Motherfucking Cocksucker Edition

onIn the grand tradition of my early-spring post about the terrificness of The Wire and my forthcoming post about the cuteness of puppies (no, really; stay tuned), today I shall profess my newfound, insanely overdue, and completely predictable adoration of Deadwood.
Since the entire world already knows about the awesomeness of HBO’s potty-mouthed American frontier drama, I won’t go on and on about it. Suffice it to say that I’m in the latter half of season one and deeply in love, mostly with the scriptwriters, though the dark n’ stormy Timothy Olyphant is certainly easy on the eyes. Sometimes it seems like the dude playing the reverend and the dude playing Calamity Jane are about to die from overacting, but other than that small concern, it’s a totally intoxicating dream.
Duh.

Make that insanely overdue.
Fixed.
after watching the first season of both the wire and deadwood because everyone kept slobbering over them i have decided I HATE BOTH SHOWS! please tell me they get better. i would happily debate w/ anyone why they are a brainless idiot for being impressed w/ blah story lines and characters that are so unbelievable. and if i hear someone refer to a police man again as "good police" my head will explode.
One of my favorite shows. The character of Al Swearengen rates as one of the best characters ever - right up there with Pacino in Scarface, Nicholson in the Shining, and De Niro in Taxi Driver. And he gets better as the series progresses.
Calamity Jane is played by a woman. I guess that could have been a joke, though?
I thought it jumped the shark pretty bad in season 2 and I never could quite get into season 3. Just warning you.
Then again, I gave BSG a second chance after their insanely ludicrous season 3 finale.
Thank you. And yes, it is quite marvelous, isn't it? Just finishing up season one? You're in for a treat.
So glad you finally discovered it... I am deeply in love with Al Swearengen. But I'm weird that way.
@3 - Indeed.
5: Yes, Calamity John was a joke.
Also, I was required to consult Google to learn what "BSG" stood for. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing.
@9
It's half & half. The first season of BSG is on par with the best orgasm you've ever had, or your first time you shot heroin. The rest? Meh.
disagree w/ #5.
gets better and better.
but will concede that there are mid-season ebbs.
still waiting for substatiation of the rumor that there will be a movie-length epilogue someday.
oh, and BSG--holy fuckin' twisteroo. wait until january? really? ah, damn you! god damn you all to hell!
Six Feet Under should also be added to that list of great HBO shows everyone should watch before they die.
I think season 2 was weak but season 3 made up for it.
@3: Wait'll you get to season 3. The dialogue gets downright Shakespearean. I fucking love this cocksucking show!
David,
Stop watching Deadwood at the end of Season 2. Please.
At that point, I recommend starting BSG and/or Homicide:LOTS. I can lend you either on DVD.
Fuck yes.
Homicide has not aged well, to be quite honest.
Haven't seen Deadwood yet, but near the end of season 2 of The Wire. Didn't care much for the first season, decided to hang with it... wow. Fucking great. Already have the next few on hold at the library, but may just have to go to Scarecrow and rent them.
Haven't seen but a few episodes, haven't decided on delving further. Perhaps. Could be if I do I'll wonder how I almost didn't.
I really was really enjoying Deadwood creator Milch's next project, 'John from Cincinnati' only to find it isn't being continued for a second season. Sob. Fan's have banded together to right this wrong. Brilliant, paradigm shifting stuff and entertaining as heck.
@10 FTW - once again Mr. Poe drives the ball to the end of the court and SPIKES! that sucker!
Rome is my favorite, since I love vaguely historical nighttime soaps, but it could have used more male nudity.
#18, each season of The Wire has a distinct flavor and plot focus, so don't be surprised if the remaining seasons are hit or miss depending on your tastes.
My favorite quotes from Deadwood:
"I am a sinner that does not expect forgiveness. But I am not a government official."
"I’d rather try touching the moon than take on a whore’s thinking"
Oh, lucky you to be discovering the joys of Deadwood for the first time! Swearingen is an amazing character, but the rest of the cast is great, too -- yes, even Calamity Jane. I won't reveal the plot twists and turns, but they're fuuuuun! And some of the nastiest characters you're ever likely to come across.
Apparently Milch abandoned Deadwood very quickly to work on John from Cincinnati, which I frankly just don't get -- sorry! -- so the abbreviated 3rd season looks as rushed as it really was.
And if you haven't seen Rome yet, honey ...
Another great and waaaay overlooked series is "Firefly", starring the ultra-yummy Nathan Filion and some additional eye candy.
Makes you realize the tee-vee isn't all dreck after all.
Have fun!
you are in for some awesome shit later in the series, particularly a brutal street fight between two large characters. the third season is extremely tense and riveting.
Deadwood is The Wire, ca.1876:
McNutty=Bullock
Bunk=Charlie Udder
Chris Partlow=Dan
Marlowe=Hearst
D'angelo=Ellsworth
Beadie=Joanie Stubbs
Bubs=Jane, or the N.General
Prop Joe=Woo
Omar=?
Okay it's a stretch but regardless they are the best two shows ever on TV ...err HBO.
Enjoying Deadwood also requires that you revisit "McCabe & Mrs. Miller," not to mention "Here Come the Brides," the '60s TV show about the arrival of women to frontier Seattle, guest-starring Bruce Lee.

Yes, you are in love, as you should be, and steel yourself for your heart to be broken, over and over. Beautifully.
"Dead Like Me" was great while it lasted.
