Media David Horsey’s One-of-a-Kind, Totally Original Idea
posted by July 23 at 13:26 PM
onLooks like somebody at the P-I is a little upset at Vanity Fair for “stealing” David Horsey’s totally one-of-a-kind idea to spoof the controversial New Yorker Obama cover with one depicting John and Cindy McCain. Under the headline “Vanity Fair Cover Ripped Off Our Cartoonist,” the P-I’s Monica Guzman waxes sarcastic:
Wait a minute. This looks familiar. Hold on - I think the Vanity Fair commenters are trying to tell us something …“This is a straight rip-off of something David Horsey did for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer on July 15th, 2008.”
“Never thought VF would stoop to plagiarism!”
“COPYCATS!!!! You are going to get sued by Horsey.”
Oh, right. Sorry, Vanity Fair. But P-I cartoonist David Horsey had this idea long before you did.
Because spoofing the New Yorker cover with a McCain version is such an incredibly original idea that no one ever thought of it before David Horsey.

The King is Kind.
The P-I still exists...?
Um, guys?
Like, I hate to burst your bubble, but nobody on the east coast in the MSM reads the Stranger.
They only know about the PI and the Times.
For that matter, Vanity Fair and the New Yorker still exist? The mind boggles, considering their circulation number must be in the single digit(s).
Who cares?
Will@3, I used to live on the east coast and I can assure you no one there has heard of The PI, The Stranger, the Seattle Times, or Seattle, for that matter (maybe briefly during that grunge thing).
I do believe if I hear one more word about the New Yorker cover, or see one more parody of it, my poor head is going to ESPLOAD.
I like the curb stomp in a diaper image.
Erica, isn't that chip on your shoulder heavy?
@4, too bad you missed the article profiling Si Newhouse, Chairman of Advance Publications, which noted the New Yorker and VF as having achieved seriously impressive levels of profitability and readership. The Italian version of VF alone made $100MM in ad revenues last year.
Facts are fun!
Doh! Article was in this past Sunday's NYT.
Y'know, I just don't like Monica Guzman. The fact that she does that for a living kinda makes me a little sick. Her profile on the PI site is so stupid. "A product of her wired generation" etc.
The Right Coast people aren't that stupid to not know where Seattle is.(even without grunge) I used to live there too. I also read Dan's column in the Westchester Weekly, so it was a pleasant surprise to find out he lives in Seattle.
@13, I didn't say they were ignorant of Seattle's existence or location, just that no one out that way cares about it or ever thinks about it, the way you would never care or think about, say, Omaha or Flagstaff or Hartford or Sitka.
@10, the NYT still exists?
Sorry, kneejerk response, emphasis on the jerk part. I'm not actually sorry, either.
I actually hadn't heard about the "controversial" New Yorker cover until I fired up my computer an hour or so ago.
Erica, Obviously you have a huge axe to grind.
But no matter how much you complain about their content, thousands and thousands of folks will still read the PI. They get millions of hits a month on their website, and the Stranger doesn't even come close. Never will.
So give it a rest.
Erica, I can't figure you out. Are you more jealous of Monica's good looks or Horsey's Pulitzer?
Please settle this bet!
@4 some circulation numbers for you. Found them on the internets, you should give it a try sometime.
Vanity Fair 1,161,788
New Yorker 1,062,018
NYT 1,077,256
Uh, Erica? I don't think the idea of spoofing a New Yorker cover is the part that was plagiarized.
Rather, it's the details of the two cartoons that are eerily similar ...
Both have a Constitution in the fireplace. One has McCain in a walker, the other in a wheelchair. One has a portrait of Dick Cheney over the fireplace, the other has Bush. Both have Cindy McCain with a handful of pills.
Of course, some of these cartoons practically write themselves. See this cartoon from Bill Bramhall of the New York Daily News that came out on 7/15/08 (same day as Horsey's). I guess pills and walking aids are too easy to pass up.
Question: If you put a million monkeys in a room and gave them each a pen and paper, would one of them draw an old Horsey cartoon?
And, in a bizarre case of this coming full circle, the comment,
was made by ME in the Vanity Fair comments section after reading this comment on Slog yesterday. So the Stranger (or, at least, the Slog Commenters) scoop the P-I once again.
This Horsey has been thoroughly beat and is quite dead.
Move on.
Humor is funny. Jaded argument not so much.
@17, I'm just killing time by trolling the comments section, but don't those numbers seem surprisingly high for the two magazines, assuming they're real? Do you know anyone that reads or subscribes to those magazines? I don't even see them in doctor's lobbies anymore.
I was kidding about the NYT; that number seems relatively low for that newspaper, in comparison to the magazine's supposed numbers. Maybe the glossies are counting all the returned, unsold issues that end up bundled in Mexican landfills?
The main difference between Horsey and the rest being that Horsey can't bother to draw Cindy McCain worth shit.
@22, I subscribe to both. And Wallpaper, Butt, Out, Conde Nast Traveler, Adbusters and Hello!
Has no one started a blog collecting all the satires of the New Yorker's original cover? There must be dozens of them out there.
Butt.
Best.

What is this, the third time in a month that Erica has picked on Monica's PI blog posts? You're protesting a little much, hon. I think you're jealous of a female blogger who gets more hits than you do.
Like the Stranger has never, EVER complained when they think someone has gotten a story idea from them. Time to grow up, kids.
