Dan Savage advocates for the Iraq War in The Stranger--Oct. 2002

"War may be bad for children and other living things, but there are times when peace is worse for children and other living things, and this is one of those times."

"In the meantime, invading and rebuilding Iraq will not only free the Iraqi people, it will also make the Saudis aware of the consequences they face if they continue to oppress their own people while exporting terrorism and terrorists. The War on Iraq will make it clear to our friends and enemies in the Middle East (and elsewhere) that we mean business: Free your people, reform your societies, liberalize, and democratize... or we're going to come over there, remove you from power, free your people, and reform your societies for ourselves."

In answer to #7,
The Qur'an specifically says several times (Surah Al-Baqarah -the Cow- 2:190-193, Surah At-Tawbah -Repentance- 9:5-6, Surah Al-Mu-minun -the Pilgrimage- 22:39-41 are all good places to start) that Jihad should only be undertaken in particular times. This includes when the enemy attacks you first (and then you are to stop when they lay down their arms), but more importantly the Qur'an says Jihad must always be carried out against oppressors.

When Bush went into Iraq, America was hunting after an oppressor: Saddam Hussein. That was a just cause to the Islamic culture. Everything after that, and especially every action in which the United States acted as oppressor, fucked up the situation.

I was also pro war in Iraq. Saddam Hussein was an oppressor who had used chemical warfare against his own citizens. I would have wished that there was more international support, and of course WMD was a fiasco (someone should have taken a history lesson: Saddam was scared of Iran), but when it comes right down to it I still think the war was the right action. It was the who, and the why, and the how of the situation that was wrong.
