Sooo...what's up with the window?
She painted out her ex-boyfriend.
Why make a painting of a photograph? If the thing exists in a photograph, why recontextualize it in oil? What does it do to the thing?
ack! these are great. i'm a big rachel maxi fan. her dumpsters are great!
What does recontextualizing a photo in oil do to the thing? It steals its immortal soul, of course. What does a photo of an oil of a photo do to the thing?
Truthfully, lots of things happen in oil that can't be captured in a photo.
Neither photos nor oils are "real" -- they're just emulsions (or pixels), swirled around into patterns that our eye tricks us into seeing pictures in. It's a neat trick.
Walking to dinner one recent evening, I saw one of her dumpster paintings in a gallery window and my friends finally ditched me and went on to get the table because I was stuck staring in happy wonder.
I need a dumpster painting. Paypal donations accepted.
There's a good article on artinfo.com about the resurgence of photo realism, with a slideshow.
Rachel is the Carrol O'Conner of painting...those were the days!
