An intern?

Just every day this month ...

That art looks like Dagwood Bumstead. Dumb.

Anyone with a sandwich named after them is not dumb.

And anyone named Cornball should not be making statements about Karen Ganz. She is one of the best artists around these parts, and she kicks cornball butt for breakfast.

Generic cornball butt, that is.

A comment like that coming from Jubilation T. Cornball, sounds like your tired and need to take an art nap on the sofa.

@3 -- But you see, my dear Niemi, "Cornball" is fake and her art is real. Really bad.

But I am willing to give you points for the sandwich thing...Peter Paul Ru(e)ben(s), anyone?

You mean Bad ASS! You're myopic or blind idiot JTC. You must have a fancy braille typewriter.

I thought it was Gantz. now there's an artist ...

Will in Seattle and JTC, what rocks have you crawled out from under?

@6 -- Look bub, it's not my fault that this broad is pumping out art I could have seen in 1984:

http://www.elpais.com/recorte/20070203elpepucul_2/LCO340/Ies/Detalle_cuadros_Dagwood_obra_1984.jpg

Or 1961:

http://www.moma.org/collection/browse_results.php?criteria=O%3AAD%3AE%3A6246&page_number=9&template_id=1&sort_order=1

Or any of a gazillion other examples (I can only post two links here) of carefully drippy and/or black-and-white and/or light-and-shadow-with-a-gun images and/or cartoons or other such stuff.

There's not an original idea to be found in any of the work of your "bad ass" artist.

so you think she's quoting Lichtenstein and Warhol! Pretty amazing company. Of course like your "criticism" art does not exist in a vacuum - "Dumb" "Really Bad" must have come from one of the Bergs. Now drill down on an original thought and see where you go from there. Of course you're still sitting on your sofa napping and afraid to venture into the real art world I suppose. And 1984 called and wants your lazy ass back.

My dear bartfast:

While it's becoming clear to all you have some vested interest in the artist under discussion (boy toy? girl toy? Ganz herself?), I would be happy to try to explain myself.

I find her "quotes" of Liechtenstein and Warhol to be like bloggers (cf ECB) who post chunks of others' works in the guise of an original post of their own. Ganz's appropriation of technique and imagery would be compelling if it were done in any intellectually honest manner.

Oooo, let's stick another odd-size canvas piece to the main body of the work...let's let the paint drip ever-so-perfectly...let's appropriate nostalgic imagery without any comment on nostalgia or, frankly, any intellectual life beyond, "Oh look, Dagwood's caught in a web! Haha. Funny old Dagwood."

The works are gimmicky, derivative, puerile, unoriginal, and when I go to Sea-Tac and confront that horrid mural, I thank Christ I am usually off to a city where the art is half-way decent.

I love art, passionately. I know what I like, and I've seen plenty of it. These are, as you must know, merely my opinions -- try not to get your panties in a knot over one man's view. You'll live longer if you relax more.

You started it with your vapid and pointless contribution to the post Cornball. Being an unbearable assface is a very poor investment for an anonymous internet fag.

@13 -- Unbearable assface!!!

WOW!!! That's AWESOME! I don't think even POE has gotten that kind of opprobrium!

Thank you, very much, for taking the time to share that sentiment.

Oh -- her art still sucks.

you're right. It is a waste of time especially since you can't spell worth a crap it's LICHTENSTEIN. If your craft is art blog posts get it right. There is no other interest here than a respectful dialog about a serious artist who has shown in Seattle and beyond for decades. It seems you have the same approach as Jesse Helms in criticizing - very dangerous.

First of all, thanks for spellcheck on Lichtenstein. Indeed, an alpine nation doesn't make much of a painter.

Aside from that, you're talking nonsense. "Respectful dialog(ue)?" Bitch, please...

"Same approach as Jesse Helms in criticizing." Umm, way to resurrect impotent cultural totems...kind of reminds me of Ganz's art.

Shoo, fly.

The endless complaining just gets old. You're actually really art-smart JTC and maybe if you'd do some actually critiscm to begin with, you would get the constant barrage of "Don't be a dick!". In fact, I just don't know you have to comment on every art thread in a disparaging manner. Comment on the ones you like, stfu on the rest!

Posted by boring | July 2, 2008 4:12 PM

But that would be...wait for it...boring.

The truth is, boring, (well sometimes it is...but I digress) that most art IS crap. Especially in benighted backwaters such as this, but also in New York, London, Paris, Munich (you can see where this is going...).

Jen's "Currently Hanging" posts are as flags to a bull(shitter), and I cannot help but comment because I am passionate about art.

And yeah, my "endless complaining" gets old -- even for ME! I wish I didn't have to complain. I wish Jen would work harder to post meaningful, provocative art as opposed to trying to grab any old slide from the light table without dropping the ash from her joint or spilling her plastic cup of last night's warm Jaegermeister.

As long as the art keeps getting posted, I am going to comment -- usually. There are plenty of Currently Hangings where I did not comment, simply because I couldn't think of anything creative, mean, and/or congratulatory enough to share.

Thanks for finding me "art-smart," but I think you meant to say that I would NOT get barraged with "you're a dick" if I did "actually criticism" (why is everyone from Eastern Europe posting today?). The truth is, I'll always be an intern, never a critic. I do not have the vocabulary (much of which is pretentious claptrap IMHO) or the depth of knowledge to be a critic. At least, not enough to be the excellent critic I would have to be to satisfy my own mad perfectionism.

But, you need to know, being called a dick (or worse, a titty) by people here does not bother me. It's just not a real enough environment to have a real impact on my psyche.

Carry on.

"...trying to grab any old slide from the light table without dropping the ash from her joint or spilling her plastic cup of last night's warm Jaegermeister."

See, it's moments like that which seem to make you almost human. Keep the funny, less of the mean-spirited.
