Boys to the Yard

Dodge ball at Cal Anderson Park.

dodge_ball1.jpg

It’s old hat to hipsters, who have been doing this here for a few years. (They apparently invented dodge ball.) But it looks more fun than sweltering in your house on a summer night, and it’s not just a bunch of feckless unwashed hipsters, either.

Rose, who was watching from the fake grass last night at about 11 p.m., says a crowd of about 40 or 50 meet in the tennis court every Tuesday and Friday night in summer (they play kickball in fall). The rules are pretty simple: If you’re tagged by the other side’s team, you’re out; shots to the head don’t count, when you grab a ball from the middle you have to touch the fence before throwing it, and if you catch a ball, the thrower is out. Rose says she used to play last year, when there were more girls.

"Boys" Dominic? Come on, it's 2008.

I'll expect Erica to award you the "Credulous Hack of the Day Award."

I'm impressed, but having no hand-eye coordination, I'm more partial to kickball. Anyone interested in a poorly organized game in one of Seattle's fine parks (preferably one with lax alcohol restriction enforcement)?

Erica doesn't care about the "boys" remark. It's about boys. Not girls. Who are women. Not girls. PMANOI.

God, I forget that this city becomes *fun* in the summer. It's so... foreign, you know?

Has anyone actually seen that tennis court used for tennis? Do people even play that sport any more?

Shots to the head don't count!? That's not dodgeball.

Big Steve, that court is used morning, noon and night for tennis. last night around 7 all courts were used and all courts had at least 1 set of players waiting to play. I'm assuming you don't live on the hill.

@5 - Jesus, you've got to be kidding right? As a year long tennis player this city is so frustrating in the summer when you can't find an open court to save your life due to all of the "hey, it's nice out, I think I have a racquet around here somewhere" interlopers.
I was gonna write that they should let the few tennis courts in this city be used for actually playing tennis...instead of hogging them their "ironic" grade school throwback "sport".

Heh, the first thing I thought of too, Original Monique. But still, it's fun to watch them run for the middle.

I just left Cap Hill on Monday after six years (this time). Sniff. I complained about it, now I'm all sentimental about it. Cal Anderson Park, it makes Seattle seem like a real city.
