Books Book Woman Who Gets Into Lots of Consensual Sexual Relationships

I suppose it had to happen sometime. Stephanie Cleveland takes issue with the “Slut” in “Bookslut.” Her essay is way, way too long. Here’s the beginning of her point:
It wasn’t until I was back in New York that I checked out Bookslut online, and got my first introduction to the magazine via the August issue. One of the first things I noticed was, despite its claim to be a magazine for “people” who love reading, and despite a few male editors flippantly (offensively?) proclaiming themselves “sluts” on the masthead, Bookslut features images of women in various states of undress, but no naked men.The Bookslut logo is a cartoon of a female nude, lying horizontally, in the great tradition of reclining female nudes painted by male artists throughout history. Bookslut is hunched eagerly over her book, and the focal point of the cartoon is her ass. She has long wavy hair, perched atop her head in a ponytail. Her body looks thin and young, traditionally attractive. You can see the edge of her right breast jutting over the side of her rib cage perkily. On the Bookslut site, readers can buy pictures of this logo and different pinup style cartoons of women, on T-shirts, tote-bags, and other merchandise.
Jessa Crispin, the head Bookslut, responds:

I don’t even know what to say here, except that I hope the Anti-Ninja Defamation League goes after Bookninja next. Seriously, I’m not a huge fan of using sexual imagery to sell a love of books—I’m not the fond of the title of Nancy Pearl’s wonderful book about books, Book Lust, for example. But I think declaring that a litblog is perpetuating violence against women is a bit much.
One thing I hope we can all agree on is that Bookslut needs to change its logo, which has been the same hunk of ugly for a very long time:
Does the the fact that the woman in the illustration is ON TOP mean nothing?
Geesh, cut the lady some slack. The world isn't the way she would have it. That's all. If the world weren't the way I wanted it to be I'd be disappointed too.
Just show this to ECB. She'll take care of it. This Crispin woman's use of the nude female form is supporting the patriarchy and oppressing women, and therefore Crispin is a traitor of the worst sort. If ECB can't bring herself to support the oil companies by firebombing the Bookslut offices, I'm sure she'll at least write such a strident and poorly reasoned letter that Crispin's brain cells will commit suicide en masse.
Truly, sexuality *is* sexism.

If it weren't for that breast in the logo, I would've assumed the reader is a man. That is just not a good representation of the female form.
How can a breast hang downwards "perkily"? Perky means standing upright, or buoyant.
And "jutting over the side of her ribcage"? WTF? Is she looking at the old Starbucks logo or what? It's hanging down. Because she's on top. Duh.
Anyway. I think the reason the logo is ugly is because it is meant as comedy. It's funny. Laugh.
Word choice causes violence, therefore word choice is violence, therefore lets ignore the violence and concentrate exclusively on word choice. The violence will certainly stop immediately after this battle is won, which will only happen after many thousands of angry exchanges on the internet.
Single syllable words, even when used ironically, oppress everyone! Freedom is multi-syallabic and unironic.
You have to be kidding me. What a let down, I get all worked up from her description and then - IS THAT IT!?!
Man, I wish I was seeing what she was imagining.
If you think a muscular, toned woman (or a rounded, unmuscular woman) is a "hunk of ugly," then keep on hoping for that agreement.

I was hoping for something like the silhouettes you see on mudflaps, but with a book. That would have been funny, but this is just creepy. Like nudists. Someone doing something mundane, only naked. Why? It's certainly not slutty.
Dear Stephanie Cleveland: Your essay is bad. It's so bad, in fact, that it isn't even wrong.
