In contrast to small bookstore readings or Seattle Arts & Lectures' giant hall, Nextbook's readings and onstage interviews (more than a dozen a year) often happened in bars—the Rendezvous, Tractor Tavern, places like that. It's a great look back at why Nextbook was so important, and a consideration of the big hole it's going to leave in Seattle's reading scene. You should read it.... The golem story was scary and wonderful and I try to see Michael Chabon speak each time he comes to town because of that lecture.
