As long as we're going off topic here, is anyone else bemused by the freakishly malformed implants on the obvious transsexual in the Sands Showgirls ad?

I'm gonna love this movie, I can tell. Step aside, Michael Moore; time for someone with a brain to make a documentary.

Yeah, you'd think that such a usually sharp guy as Maher would understand that making a movie about how much religion sucks is textbook choir-preaching. If religious folks were the type to be swayed by facts, logical argument, or snark, they'd have jumped ship on their own a long time ago.

Yeah, but Shub, you forget the pleasures for us of laughing at them.

"I wouldn't mind seeing opera die. Ever since I was a boy, I regarded opera as a ponderous anarchronism, almost the equivalent of smoking." -- Frank Lloyd Wright

I'm guessing snide professional atheists like Maher et al preach to the choir for the same reason preachers do -- to fill up the collection plate. It's niche marketing.

Plus, constantly repeating clever variants of "We're so much smarter than these yokels! Haw! Look at 'em praying like a buncha rubes!" can be a diverting pastime. But it's not going to make any converts any more than "If you don't do what we say you're all going to hell!" does going the other way.

Well, if you can make an opera about the tastelessness of Jerry Springer or the inconvenient death of Leon Klinghoffer, why not one about Gore's Rising High Cs or Shepherds Lying on the Heath.

Paul,
I thought that e.e. cummings was a poet until I read these words of yours:

"libertarians tend to bug the ever-loving shit out of me"

Never has something spoken to the deepest depths of my soul that way. I have to admit it; I am now completely smitten.

Marry me, and let's be irritated by Libertarians forever.

BTW, I'm totally fat, so I hope you're into that.

Love always,
Sara

Paul:

Do not marry me.

But libertarians bug the shit out of me, too.

Most of them (in the U.S., at least) are just pot-smoking Republicans who like low taxes. Libertines who like small gov't.

The last 15%? True believers. Really think everything would work out fine. Totally off their fukkin' rockers. Anarchists, but with the sense to not knock over trash cans and newspaper boxes.

In this country at least, about all I ever hear them bitch about is money, particularly, their own notable pile. Cops beating people up, civil liberties? Not so much. A little more lately in our constitutionally-challenged times, yes.
