This Is Why ECB and I Get On So Well

posted by on June 16 at 10:36 AM

MRI and PET scan studies are showing remarkable similarities between the brains of gay men and straight women, and between those of lesbians and straight men.

For example, the brains of straight men and of gay women share certain common features: both are slightly asymmetric, with the right hemisphere larger than the left, say the Swedish researchers. On the other hand, the brains of gay men and straight women are both symmetrical.

Similar trends emerged when scientists tracked connectivity in the amygdala, the region of the brain involved in emotional learning and in activating the fight-or-flight response. They noted strong similarities between gay men and straight women, and lesbians and straight men.

The findings are published in the current issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Interesting. But, what's it all mean in regards to how the brains of gay men function? Dear Science podcast?

Is this biological determinism also why your politics seem to dovetail so often with a revised version of social darwinism?

Does this mean you watched the Tony awards together?

then why don't lesbians like straight guys as much as fags & hags? i mean, some do, but there's been some... general hostility out there.

Indeed. I have never understood what is so pleasing about research that supports biological determinism. When they find a data point that says you are free to live how you wish, it doesn't seem to generate banner headlines.

ok, so then what explains your soft spot for charles?

This may explain why I tend to get along well with lesbians, then? (middle-aged lesbians, anyway)

Where's Bellevue Ave to say this to Dan?

long quote, short commentary, typical ECB. Are you incapable of doing something that involves more action than checking your RSS feeds, copying and pasting? Posted by Bellevue Ave | June 13, 2008 11:20 AM

I'm a straight male, and I love ECB. Even when I disagree with her (fairly often, actually), I think it's great that she posts and takes no shit. I've yelled at the screen when reading some of her posts that pissed me off, but I would never post a comment like some of the rank, vile, putrid, puss of words that some assholes here squirt out.

Keep going ECB, some of us don't say so very often, but you have fans.

What a damning double standard you've discovered, Julie.

Finally! This explains why I so enjoy doing manly things with my rat and rhesus monkey buddies.

I didn't realize my commentaries had been elevated to the level where they were worthy of critique themselves.

anyway, I think the more interesting point of this isn't that dan was lazy, but that dan and erica are lazy in the SAME WAY! JUST LIKE HE STATED WHY THERE MIGHT BE AN AFFINITY BETWEEN THEM!

Whether brains are similar or not has absolutely nothing to do with getting along or having affinity for others with similar brain structures. Otherwise why would the vast vast majority of the relationships in the world be opposite sex heterosexual pairings?

Opposites attract has been proved over and over in a gazillion animal studies. Nice stab though.

I think that ECB's posting today and yesterday has been some of her best work ever! I hope she keeps it up!

I know I say it's the mind that attracts me ... but seriously, I'm sorry, but I'm only attracted to straight women, not gay men.

On a related note, if gay males function on similar wavelengths, and straight/males/females have differing brains, isn't it far easier to get along with your partner if you're gay?

And what about the in-betweens? Were bisexuals carefully excluded from the study, or just presumed to be nonexistent? Assuming they were excluded, how were they defined? Kinsey number?

I wish sexuality were so black and white as to be easily studied this way.

It's still an interesting finding, though.

Well that's odd. I would have expected them to find that the left hemisphere is larger in straight men and gay women.

Next, researchers find similarities in the brain size of gay men, straight women, and pedophiles. Stay tuned for more physiological bullshit data. Next week we find the gay DNA hidden in all of us.
