Recipe of the Day: Spring Vegetable Stew (recipe and photo via Boston Globe)

Salt and pepper, to taste
1/4 pound haricots verts (very slender green beans)
14 fresh asparagus, ends snapped off
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 spring onion, trimmed and sliced
3 cloves garlic, grated finely
1 piece (1-inch) ginger root, grated
3 slender carrots, cut in thin 2-inch matchsticks
1 small fennel bulb, white part thinly sliced
1/4 pound sugar snap peas
1 cup green peas (fresh or frozen)
1 small zucchini, cut into matchsticks
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1/4 cup water
1 Boston or bibb lettuce heart, quartered
2 tablespoons chopped Italian parsley
1 tablespoon chopped fresh basil

1. In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook the green beans for 2 minutes. Drain and rinse them with cold water.
2. Cut the asparagus stalks into 1-inch pieces; reserve the tips.

3. In a large skillet over medium heat, heat the olive oil. Cook the onion for 1 minute. Add the garlic and ginger and cook 1 minute more. Add the carrots, fennel, and asparagus stalks. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 4 minutes.

4. Add the sugar snaps, peas, zucchini, asparagus tips, sugar, water, salt, and pepper. Cover and simmer for 9 minutes. Add the lettuce heart and cook 1 minute.

5. Remove from the heat. Sprinkle with parsley and basil. Add more salt and pepper, if you like. -

In the US, "slut" means exactly the same thing that it (according to your link) means in Egypt. Not really unique.

In this as in all else, McCain is showing his age. "Reaching out to conservative Christians" is a tired strategy from last decade, not this one. The right-wing Christian alliance has crumbled into dust, with old firebrands like Pat Robertson and James Dobson mostly ignored. Evangelical groups are abandoning not only the Republican Party in droves, but the very social-conservative platforms they've been thumping. The new buzzwords in evangelical circles are "global warming" and "global poverty". They're not voting for McCain. Obama actually has a chance to garner a majority of evangelical christian votes in November, if McCain lives that long.

Yeah, I almost plotzed* when I saw that AA hypercolor ad on the back of this week's Stranger. Did we learn nothing from the 80s?

*OK, I don't actually know what that means, but it just sounded right.

What is wrong with me? I've lost my will to Slog. Will I get it back or is it gone forever? Ever since that John Doe character took us to task Slog has seemed muted, the insults half hearted, the debates weirdly cordial. Or is it me, is my filter different now that I've been called a sociopath?

Thank God we've discovered those housekeepers working illegally in the US. Hopefully now we can have a swift deportation.

I think the mayors were fairly outspoken about the SCOTUS decision-- especially Richard Daley, who sort of flew off the handle in that endearing Daley-esque fashion.

Did you want them to start a riot or something?

I know there are tons of stories in this entry, but the story about Slavedriver Bitchlady (hat tip to friend for the name) is a must-read for her defense lawyer's quotes alone.

I don't know. It looked like the standard "My client didn't do it, but if she did do it, it totally wasn't her fault."

it's not spring & half the vegetables in your recipe aren't even in season anymore.
