The Morning News

Terror Suspects have the right to challenge their detention in U.S. civil court, rules the Supreme Court.

Four Boy Scouts were killed when a tornado landed on their camp in Iowa. 48 more were injured.

Robert Mugabe is really fucking evil:

The men who pulled up in three white pickup trucks were looking for Patson Chipiro, head of the Zimbabwean opposition party in Mhondoro district. His wife, Dadirai, told them he was in Harare but would be back later in the day, and the men departed.

An hour later they were back. They grabbed Mrs Chipiro and chopped off one of her hands and both her feet. Then they threw her into her hut, locked the door and threw a petrol bomb through the window.

Women Voters are being heavily courted by both McCain and Obama.

Southern Israel bombarded by mortar shells and rockets this morning.

John McCain is having trouble getting all the republican troops behind him.

Seattle vs. Sonics has already cost the city $1 million in legal bills.

Landlords may soon face stiff penalties for tenants committing crimes on their property.

Washington State ranks among the best in birth weights.

Bellevue Teachers are heading into the summer threatening to strike next year.

Finally…Jimmy Jet!

I was doing some research recently on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and I had no idea how bitterly controversial the design was at the time. One critic called it a permanent scar from which the nation will never heal. Dude… harsh.

That got me thinking: What will the Iraq War Memorial look like?

It oughtta be a 1,200 foot tall gas pump with wildly spinning numbers indicating lives lost and money spent, slammed down right next to the Washington Monument. Maybe then people won’t forget next time.

The Iraq War Memorial will be illuminated 24 hours a day by xenon floodlights powered by clusterbombs (sorry D.C. residents, but this will be quite loud), and be visible for at least 10 miles in every direction. It’ll also play Toby Keith’s “music” full blast in order for the observer to appreciate and savor the prevailing zeitgeist, while in tandem making it impossible for the Memorial to be ignored–unlike the last few years of the actual War itself.

I can now haz Pritzker Prize??

Football coaches have more avenues of appeal for a bad call than does a Gitmo detainee on trial for his life, so this might address the imbalance a bit.

The Supreme Court made the correct decision, and most decent Republicans will conclude the same, like John McCain.

Fleischman also said the U.S. medical profession should be more rigorous in encouraging women to continue their pregnancies as close to term as feasible and reduce the number of early, induced deliveries, often Caesarean, that frequently produce underweight infants.

hey, does this quote make any sense to any of the other commenters? i just don't know what the fuck this guy is talking about. i've never heard of anyone, other than maria callas, doing anything so likely to produce a nightmarish outcome for you and your baby than to deliberately end the pregnancy early, unless there was some compelling medical reason for it. the whole rest of the article talks about poverty and race as factors, so where the hell does this weirdness fit in?

Not news:

Obama dumped his VP search chairman dude a super insider DC veteran multi millionaire who earned 21 million compensation leading at Fannie Mae.

[The. Point: Not. Part. Of. Change. Theme.]

The dude also served on about 5 boards favoring huge CEO copmensation, & just after he left Fannie Mae it was audited like hell. Then he got low loan rate deals like 3.5% interest loans from Country Wide. [Country Wide Is. A. Big. National. Lender. Whom. Obama. Has. Criticized. As. Part. Of. The. Mortgage. Meltdown. Mess.]

[I.e., (that means "that is") More. Not. Looking. Like. The. Change. Thing.]

Obama reacted quickly after initially saying this doesn't count as searching for VP isn't really a job, just a minor task or something. [Point: Obama. Human. Learning. And. Making. Some. Good. Tactical. Moves. After. Initial. Mistakes. This. Is. Good.]

On VP: Strickland said nope to being VP, not sure if Slog covered that.

Webb has too much confederacy-respecting verbiage and other baggage on his record.

Wonder what we'd learn about Richardson (womanizing??), Rendell, Gen. Clark of AR (warning: Southerner); Nunn of GA (warning: Southerner), Nelson of FL (warning: Southerner), some other general dude like James Jones we've never heard of before (warning: long military careers -- what's his position on climate change, equality, etc.?)

Also news: there was a poll cited on Olberman saying HRC as VP doesn't help or hurt Obama. They didn't show any comparison to other VPstakes candidates.

[Note: That. Information. Would. Be. An. Argument. She. Is. Not. Needed, Tending. To. Undercut. PC's. Electoral. Map. Jitters. Comment: Things. So. Bad. McCain. So. Bad. Looking. Like. Obama. Will. Win. Even. If. Makes. Two. Mistakes. A. Week.]

[PS: I certainly hope the above tidbits aren't too "incomprehensible." I'll try to be more clear in the future.]

Unity y'all!

$1 million seems a small price to pay given the likely settlement when the Sonics leave.

I'm guessing they are leaving no matter what, but the city will get paid more than the $10 million that's being offered.
