"mama" invokes racist themes (myth of the happy "family" of enslaved persons) when referring to an African American woman.
While often I think cries of racism based on word usage are overblown I'd call it on this one. Same if they called her an "aunt" or Obama an "uncle," as I believe a German paper did recently.
