Slog - Comments on The End of Country Happiness

The BBC reports: Oil prices have risen after emergency talks among the world's top oil powers and leading consuming nations over the weekend ended with no real resolution. US light, sweet crude for August delivery increased by $1.38 a barrel to settle at $136.74 while London Brent crude was up $0.99 at $136.24 a barrel. Those thick and too happity country people over there? It might benefit them greatly to recall (and restore) the role horses had in the pre-automobile world of their humble/honest/hardworking/churchgoing ancestors....

@6 - Actually, Canada already has done experiments on wind-power fuel cell engines for trains, which are far more efficient than diesel engines, flaminggbanjo, so that's not technically true.

And with plug-in hybrids getting around 100 mpg and most of our region having cheap electricity from wind, solar, and hydro - it definitely won't be true for much longer.

W.I.S. : I think what you mean is it technically is true, unless those wind-powered trains you speak of are currently in operation, having replaced the fossil-fuel-powered trains and trucks that currently transport food from producer to consumer.

But it's a great idea, nevertheless.

Comment by Charles_Mudede_Is_A_Latent_Racist

Over where? Ocala, Florida? Does being intentionally opaque in references give you kicks? A link finally gets put in a charles post and it, unsurprisingly, has nothing to do with the post itself? Oh, almost forgot, do you hope that those "Happity" (ps WTF is happity??) people in Oklahoma go back to horse-drawn buggies, because they may have a blind spot and may accidentally run over a "relative" that may be different than those people? And no, I don't feel like letting it go.

Not just poo.

Annoying things that went away and made cities nicer when cars replaced horses:

1) pee
2) poo
3) corpses rotting in street (really)
4) noise - yes, steel-shod hooves on cobblestones made quite a racket, compared to cars
5) having to put on an onion on your belt when you rode to Shelbyville, which was the style at the time

We all know what down sides cars have, of course.
