Correct answer is "or something"--you've got a 2G network iPhone, which is probably fine for you. New apps are coming in addition to software updates in July. So don't bitch.

Comment by Russell

I've got a 1st gen iPhone, and I'm not going to be in a huge hurry to replace it (although I'm sure I will eventually). I mostly use it for voice and text messaging. I use a fair amount of the other stuff that's more affected by a faster connection, but not often or heavily. I'm excited about third-party apps (which will run on both old and new anyway)- maybe one of those will change my mind but in the meantime I just use it as a really good phone. ^-^

Will @9,

Actually, they're citing substantially longer battery life for the 3G iPhone.

As for Japanese and Korean phones, that might be a criticism of the U.S. wireless industry as a whole, but hardly a ding against the iPhone (unless moving to Japan or Korea for the sake of better wireless service seems like a reasonable option).

Dan - don't you know any mac geeks? And where did you find an iPhone anyway - they were supposedly sold out for the last month - which was considered another strong signal that they'd be updated soon.

Many of the new features announced today are the result of a software update and will be available to older iPhones and iPod Touch devices.

From http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/09/iphone-3g-is-finally-official/

"Update: Just bought an iPhone? Listen up: "Customers who purchased a 2.5G iPhone on or after May 27 and want to swap it out for a new iPhone will be able to do so without incurring an additional handset charge for the new device. They will of course need to turn in their 2.5G iPhone." And for the rest of you, AT&T says there's no way to buy it without agreeing to a contract. So sorry."
