Slog - Comments on SIFF 2008: Day 19 Recommendations

Shocking! There's only a week left in the festival. Assuming you didn't see it yesterday, the matinee slot is all about Baghead (4:30 pm at the Egyptian). If you already saw that or are willing to wait for it to come out in theaters, you might try the well-acted Encarnacíon (6:30 pm at Pacific Place)—but avoid the cheery Disney tribute Walt and El Grupo (4:30 pm at the Uptown) like the plague. Only free after work, like us normal people? Head to Queen Anne for Momma's Man (7:15 pm at the Uptown), a family drama directed by the son of...

Sorry to hear Buddha Collapsed Out of Shame isn't that great, but I have to disagree and say that, while very strange, Sukiyaki Western Django was very fun - and a movie you really should see on the big screen.

Combalimon sounds intriguing, but people who haven't seen French films about farmers (or Swiss or Belgian) should be warned that they are usually brutally honest about what being a farmer is like - if you're a veggie who worries about animal rights, you might want to think again about seeing such flics.

Surprised no mention of Teddy Bear today ...

@#1: I disagree that Sukiyaki Western Django was fun. It was neat to look at, and the concept had some real humor potential, but for me and my party of 8 or so people, the huge amounts of rape and repetitive violence ruined the camp factor. Not saying there's no place for these things in cinema but I wouldn't recommend this movie to anyone as "fun".

Actually, I haven't seen his other movies...I didn't claim to be a film expert. I don't typically prep for a movie viewing by taking the time to watch the director's entire oeuvre beforehand. If that makes me an unenlightened SIFF viewer, then so be it. I just think that in the case of Sukiyaki Western Django, the incongruity of tone and subject matter were off-putting. It's a stylistic choice but not one that I happen to enjoy or find "fun."

Oh, I don't know. I personally make a point of watching ALL of a director's movies before I watch ANY of that same director's movies, otherwise, how will I know whether I would like them? That's just logic.

I also travel backwards in time to respond to blog posts long before I read them. I'm writing this from the year 2009.

Hoyden, you're clearly an amateur at this. ;)

Yes, also, the movie would have made a brilliant 15 minute short on Liquid TV; alas it generated into snuff porn. Do not recommend.
