what're the stranger's parent's finances like, anyhow? Is the stranger a cash cow?

@1: Best not to ask those kinds of questions.

So Erica, are you going to try to apply for Pam's old job now that she's leaving the Times?

Come on Erica! The Times offers better benefits and pay than the Stranger. DO IT. Cash in sister.

The Times would never hire her. Hell, the PI wouldn't hire Feit. I'm sure they all had a good laugh or two while passing his resume around.

@4-- no matter what you might think of Ms. C. Barnett's scrivening, you epithet is unspeakably puerile.

My dear C. Barnett, on behalf of men, my deepest apology.

People read the Weekly?

What's in it?

The SF Weekly is actually a better paper than the Guardian, or it least it was when I was living down there. The Guardian is crap. SF doesn't really have anything akin to The Stranger.

As far as the Stranger goes, I only check the Slog. I don't read what the Stranger considers "enterprise journalism" - it's all obvious rehashing of your typical alt-weekly fodder. The Slog is only relevant because it's updated so often.

The Weekly has better writers, but I don't look at their blogs because they only post new items once or twice a day.

Both of you could go down the toilet tomorrow (and financially? It'll happen) so the only thing I'd miss is the constant blog/slogging. The Weekly could continue to write fresh stuff and the stranger could mock it two days later on the Slog.

9, the weekly's credibility is undercut by its snarky tone and general shallowness, as well as it's predictably reactionary take on progressive politics in the bay area. the sf weekly got what's coming to it. it used classic walmart tactics to put the guardian out of business, and failed. i say "hah!"

@11 Snarky tone? General shallowness? Predictably reactionary take? Dang, I thought you were talking about the Stranger!

@7 Oh, knock it off, Hannibal.

And while you're at it, knock off the American Psycho shit. It's so...

tick, tock

predictable.

American Psycho is one of the best novels of all time, AJK-R?. The film is arguably just as good when considering mediums. Just sayin'.

Care to disclose any financial dealings that Dan has with VVM?

@15

Pretty sure I've read x2 more books than youz, good sir. And that's only counting junior high.

@10--The Weekly's blogs move slow because (from talking to one of the Weekly's writers)hate writing on their Web site's blogs. That's why it's not updated very often and, in turn, nobody ever comments on their posts.

Speeding up the Weekly's blog would be the same as accelerating a turd.

Wait, you're not allowed to change your prices if it puts other people out of business? That's just capitalism. What the hell?

That's what they get for firing Robert Christgau. Stupid, Stupid VVM!

Posted by Jeff Stevens | June 11, 2008 9:27 AM

It's doubtful that VVM actually has a cash flow problem (I mean, look at Mike Lacey's bar bill!). This appears to be an attempt to stave off handing over a check prior to possible new rulings and appeals that could change the current outcome. SW and the rest of the chain - with low overheads and healthy ad revenues - aren't hurting.

@10: It's probably much cheaper to keep Slog going than to keep printing dead tree, ad-packed, space-limited Strangers.

Posted by K | June 11, 2008 10:19 AM

Let's see. Print revinue is dying. Printing costs are up. Online ad revinue is non-existants or fickle at best.

Yes, this is a problem that will affect only the Times, PI and the Weekly.

Right?

SF Weekly and SFBG can both suckit! I wouldn't miss either of them.
