Maybe Not the Best Joke to Make When You’ve Verbally Abused Your Wife in Public?

posted by on June 26 at 16:42 PM

Republican candidate John McCain, chuckling, tells the Las Vegas Sun he “stopped beating my wife just a couple of weeks ago.”

Oh, John, you big ironist! What a kidder!

Now, I'm usually right with ya on ECB and her pet topic, @1, but this post is right on point.

Now we know: John McCain is "aware of" Teh Internets and strategic misogyny. Sounds like a heartland winner to me.

hey, um...it might help if ecb provided a link to the interview in question, or at least post the quote in the context of the question mccain was asked. i feel like it is possible that mccain was calling out the interviewer for hitting him with a complex question, a logical fallacy for which the query "so when did you stop beating your wife?" is a common example. no?

The comment is right at the end: http://lasvegassun.com/blogs/ralstons-flash/2008/jun/26/transcript-mccain-interview/

Yes, he's referring to a well-known example of a no-win question, but still a bad choice of words.

Wait, ECB cherry-picks things to make her "points?" Well, I never...

Sadly, @1 wins.

ECB is either trying to get hate comments, or really seriously totally needs to get laid.

Can anyone out there take a joke? I fucking hate McCain, but to go through the trouble of posting about this? Really?

ECB didn't say McCain was sexist. She said it was a poor choice of words for someone who has called his wife a cunt in public. Frankly I'm getting a littled tired of journalists inifinitely parsing politician's verbal gaffes this season, but ECB's post, when viewed objectively fits more with that trend than with her propensity to complain about sexism.

He wasn't making a joke about beating his wife, Erica. As @5 said, McCain was referring to the question that had just been posed to him, characterizing it as a no-win question along the lines of "So have you stopped beating your wife?" He wasn't trying to make a joke about spousal abuse. Geez, cut him some slack.

Sarcasm doesn't work in print. I will be making this point over and over.
