Given the Bush/McCain vs. Obama debate over "appeasing" our enemies, I'm sorta surprised the second paragraph of this pg. 856,000 NYT story wasn't a pg. 1 headline: "Rice met with government leaders from both the government majority and the Hezbollah-led opposition, signaling her support for a compromise..." That's right, Bush's own Secretary of State is doing what the "naive" and "dangerous" Obama said he'd do: She's talking to "the terrorists." (The U.S. considers Hezbollah a terrorist group.) Conclusion? Even President Bush's own secretary... That doesn't surprise me at all. According to the book "The Israel Lobby and US Foreign Policy" by John J. Mearsheimer & Stephen M. Walt, the US has flirted with Syria and even Iran (via the US Affairs Section of the Swiss Embassy) over the past decade or so. Diplomacy isn't pretty. Party lines become murky as Obama is finding out. Hey, give her credit. At least we're not going to war with Hezbollah. As I recall, even Israel speaks with them (through intermediaries).
