I’ll Say One Thing for Hillary Clinton…

posted by on June 5 at 12:10 PM

She succeeded, with her quasi-victory rally in New York on Tuesday, in getting Tina Turner’s “Simply the Best” completely stuck in my head.

Clinton introduced her new valedictory theme song after her speech ended Tuesday night, it rattled around in my brain all day on Wednesday, and then this morning I woke up with it playing on repeat in the soundtrack of my mind. So naturally I bought it off I-Tunes and listened to it a little more in an attempt to satiate whatever unmet Tina Turner desire Clinton had managed to trigger.

Which reminds me of one of the best lines—perhaps simply the best line—that I heard on CNN during the primary night coverage on Tuesday.

ALEX CASTELLANOS, REPUBLICAN STRATEGIST: The Clintons are the Ike and Tina Turner of politics. They don’t do things nice and easy, they do them nice and rough. That’s what we saw tonight.

It figures. This was Kerry's theme song in 04. Like that worked. I also heard it played when Theresa was at SCCC. Ugh.

Tina Turner, Celine Dion, who are these fucking people?

I think "Better Be Good To Me" is way more fitting now. Way.

Like many reactions which revere or scorn too much, the idea that the Clintons are overly rough is just so much baloney.

Examples of being rough:
Bush, versus Dukakis.
Kennedy, versus Nixon.
Give 'em hell Harry.
LBJ. Always.
FDR. He promised to not send our boys overseas, remember?
T Jefferson, who paid people to pretend to be reporters to plant fake scandals about the Federalists.
Obama, in his litigation to knock off the ballot the black former State Senator Alice Palmer and the other black Democratic candidates opposing him for state senate -- leaving the Democratic voters in his 80% Democratic district with no one to vote for except him!
(Legal, yes. Soft, no. Rough, yes.)
Obama's top aide Axelrod, consulting to the Daley machien in Chicago for many years including its chosen team members such as Obama.

Nothing HRC has done is overly rough compared to successful politicians.

Examples of not being rough:

Dukakis, versus Bush.
Kerry, versus Bush.

HRC failing to concede on Tuesday and conceding instead on Friday despite all the moaning and whining, is not rough.

Fighting for MI and FL via established rules for appeals, despite all the moaning and whining, is not rough.

Instead of unsupported opion laden chit chat like this, how about some real news, like how Obama today is causing the DNC to stop taking lobbyist money?

That's real change, or a good step forward. Exactly the kind of specific thing we want. Very awesome.

Is he next going to say all his endorsers have to stop taking lobbyist money?

'twould be all the more awesome.

I heard that you can get rid of songs stuck in your head by thinking of the lyrics to the theme song of Alvin and the Chipmunks.......

#1, did you just align Tina Turner with CELINE DION? Seriously?

This reminds me of that episode of The Office where David is a guest speaker to a room full of bored businessmen. At the end of his speech, having succeeded only in boring everybody half to death, he puts on this song and marches triumphantly out the door. Then when the perplexed host gets up and turns the stereo off, he comes back through the door furious that she cut off his exit prematurely. Hmm.

I think this is the song. Am I misremembering?

"Simply The Best?" Wow. Pride much? What would The Family say?

The end of Hillary is the end of American egomania. I hope.

The age of Obama is the age of American humility. I hope.

You BOUGHT it? From ITUNES? Putz! It's all over Limewire.

Besides that, I adore Tina, but the Irma Thomas version is better.

4, "duke of earl" works like a charm for me. or just thoroughly visualizing taking the cd out of the player and breaking it in two.

Yes--but did you notice the VERY NEXT SONG that played her out after Tina's finished?

Petty's "Won't Back Down."

Eli, did you miss Anderson Cooper's "I want to be your boo" line? That was the highlight of the night, for sure.

@5 don't look at me, Clintons did it. Some bullshit Celine Dion tune was her earlier campaign song. They have their iPod set on SUCK.
