I live in Seattle and can't stand this fucking weather. Why do I live here? Because of my job and my career. I can't stand the weather in Seattle in May and June because it's fucking depressing.

Oh and I'd like to hear from the people in Seattle that loves temperatures in the 50s in June in this city. I'm sure it's the same group of people that hate it when it's over 75 degrees in Seattle.

Yes, Dan sounds like he is on the rag. BUT the NWS is reporting that Seattle has been around 10 to 15 degrees BELOW normal for the last couple of months. We are supposed to have rain but it should be warmer than what it is.

That is one reason I haven't made any real attempts to leave this shithole for the NW. I love the sun, and I understand "The Sun" is a totally foreign concept most of the year there.

I don't think the sun set at all this weekend. That's how sunny it was.

Other reasons: I'm not filthy rich, I have no discernable job skillz, I don't hate my family enough to put 5000 miles between us.

It's no better in Chicago. In the six months I've lived here I can count truly nice days on one hand. It's been alternating between pouring rain and humidity that makes you want to stay inside and take a nap. I live in the student ghetto in Hyde Park, where the heat is good in winter, but in summer we have to rely on open windows and a breeze. Be grateful you have central air.

@19 -- Dude, "pride" gets rammed down our throats to no end every June...why can't those of us who find the entire enterprise ridiculous be able to respond?

Yep, I'm one of those people that likes it 50F in June and hates it when it gets over 75F. I moved from Texas for exactly this sort of thing--no air conditioning needed, no worries about RUNNING OUT of drinking water, no need to water the yard to keep everything looking nice. The first five years I lived here there was a "drought"--yuck. The cool green wet we have up here is brilliant.

@7: I'm also one of those people. I've stayed in western Washington because I like the cold and the damp and the rain.

Really, though--anyone who moved here doesn't have the right to complain about the rain. It's not as if Seattle is known for much else, so you knew exactly what you were getting into. If you're so despondent about the lack of sun, move somewhere else and take your umbrella with you.

I'm not hugely fond of the chill, but the grey is all right; too much sun makes me dizzy or sunburned. I'll take it if it means I don't have to deal with large chunks of time that are either 90-degrees-plus or below 30, like in the two cities I grew up in (Denver and DC). Temperature extremes are the worst.

For those of us who have lived in Seattle for more than a year we all know the weather here sucks. It sucks it always has and it always will. We complain every year that this year is worse than the last or even the year before that and actually it was just as crappy last year even the year before that. We have a crappy weather system we always have and most likely always will. Over all the weather is not that bad it is the mindless bitching and moaning about the same old shit that is not going to change. So shut up about the weather. Shut up, Shut up, Shut up.

#52 - yeah, it's beautiful here today. Ever since my office moved to the BofA building downtown though, I've been gettin' real bitchy about the weather. Permanent 30 mph marine winds and no sun on this block gettin' me down. Although I live in the Mission, and I will say my back porch consistently has the best weather of anywhere I've ever lived. Has it been windier than normal all year or is it just me?

Dan, I was in Reno all weekend. I had to go for work, and was so looking forward to some nice weather. I got it there - beautiful blue skies, glowing sun, and 75 degrees. But Reno is one of the most depressing places ever. It has horrid casinos, cigarette smoke everywhere you go, pitiful drunks blowing their paychecks at slot machines at 3:00 on a Friday, two acres of parking surrounding each building, scary drug dealers and gang bangers on the strip, scarier groups of drunken bozos at night, zero culture, Republicans, terrible drivers (plus you have to drive everywhere), strip malls, and a dry, brown landscape. Despite the sun, I was miserable, and can tell you that I have never been happier in my entire life than when the plane touched down in our dark, gray, wet and freakin' glorious city. Maybe a trip to Nevada would help lift your spirits?

@25, @40. I enjoy wearing nice clothes. colorful clothes, short sleeve shirts, nice shoes. June - August are the months you like to wear less clothes. I've been here for 11 years now. I enjoy surprises like two years ago when June was warm as hell and pride in Seattle was the sunniest and warmest pride that I've ever seen here.I'd like to see three months of sunny weather to counter the 9 months of depressing gray.
Btw, my gripe with the Pride committee is that they fucking plan pride the same weekend as SF, NYC, Toronto, and Chicago. I wonder when the committee will get it through their fucking heads that
the weather in this city sucks in June and if they planned it the next weekend later, the chances that we might get good weather increases 5 folds

Why are we competing with cities who have better pride parades that same weekend? I'd rather go to NYC or SF for pride that weekend and then spend the next weekend in Seattle for Pride rather than having to pick and choose. If they planned pride for the next weekend, they could actually generate more profits from out of town visitors and locals who'd stay in town that weekend.

1)it sucks, but I just think on how miserable I was in the midwest when it was 95 degrees with 95% humidity and I can soldier on. Plus, I look so much better in sweaters than shorts...

2)not much pity for Dan though; unlike the rest of us, he can afford to jump on Keck's private jet and fly off to the Stranger's secret sexy, hide-a-way in the tropics...

3)quit wishing for Pride Weekend rain!! I'm having a yard sale that weekend!!

I'm a life-long Northwesterner, but this shit gets to me, every fucking year. It's just that I also know that if I moved to a place with warmer spring and early summer weather I'd be complaining about the sweltering temperatures in July, the brownish color and lack of evergreens, the tornadoes, the bugs, whatever. As it is I complain about the two weeks of 90-plus weather we have every year in Seattle. Put me in California (excepting San Francisco and its welcoming fogs) and I'd quickly go bugfuck, and it would be even worse someplace ungodly hot (Phoenix) or humid.

I live just over the crest of CapHill on the lake Washington side, so tsunamis be-damned; I won't get any wetter then than I am now.

@65. If we had the same transporation networks as in the Bay Area, that'd make the cost of living increase, as people would want to move in hopes of not wanting to use their cars. The weather here is as temperate as the weather in SF. Except we don't have the extreme micro-climates like in the Bay Area. Ex. SF - 65 degrees. Drive to San jose and it's 80 degrees.

That's one of the reasons why some city officials are dragging their heels on building a BART/SkyTrain-like system.

@27:

Well, I don't see anybody holding a gun to your head or anything.

When I lived in the City in the early/mid '80's, the foggy, cold, windy, gray, wet weather was a pereneal topic for kvetching from both locals and transplants alike.

And of course, if you're lucky, you might be able to afford to relocate to say, Hayward or the Castro Valley, 'cause I hear that even with a 20% drop in housing prices, San Fran is still one of the most expensive metropolitan areas in the country.

So, you know, good luck with that.

"Shades of the Summer of '93...the one that made me wish I was back in Dutch Harbor. "

Yeah, '93 was bad. It was one of those "Years without a Summer" we get every decade or two. And it sucked. I really, really hope that doesn't happen this year, because if Summer never really shows up it is fucking awful.

So far, though, this June is sucking way more than most. The heat keeps kicking on in our house. Normally we don't have to turn the heat on in June, even if the high temps are in the 60s. And I had to get my wool coat back out of the closet to go out in the evenings.

I saw someone wearing a knitted ski cap waking down our street yesterday.

It's not the rain that is getting me down so much as the cold. Highs in the low 50s are not June weather in Seattle. Rain, sure. A little bit cool, sure. But this is abnormal. I am a Seattle native, too -- I have seen some pretty crappy summer weather in my lifetime.

Dear cranky bitches: fuck you. The whole fucking world knows that Seattle's rainy, it's like our fucking trademark. JUNE IS ALWAYS FUCKING LIKE THIS, I've lived here for 27 years, and it's ALWAYS FUCKING LIKE THIS. Go buy a full-spectrum bulb and turn it on next to your computer so you get some good light while you bitch about everything and everyone related to Seattle. If that doesn't work, leave.

I personally am enjoying the wierd mix of super-windy and bright cloudy sky at the moment. Seattle's weather is awesome, and obviously it weeds out the weak.

Not true, Dr. Zaius. I don't just care about comments. If I wanted to do some real clickbait, I'd write a post complaining about the three folks that needed the access ramp to get on to the bus today. My 10 minute bus ride took 20. One person was in a wheelchair, and that's cool. The other two had, it appeared, drank themselves into disability. Not cool.

And you can never really tell what will take off in comments. But thank you for doing your part, Doc.

Well, Jessica, I think the one who is breaking out the "fuck you" and the all-caps is probably more likely to be a cranky bitch. Just sayin'.

June is not always like this, though it is often cloudy and cool. But this is colder. A little Googling shows the stats to prove it. For example, the Times posted the other day:

59.2: Average temperature for the first week of June for the past 60 years

52.5: Average temperature for the first week of June 2008

That's a relatively significant difference in that for many of us it means the difference between having to heat our homes with outrageously expensive fuel this month, or not.

They just said on KIRO that the Weather Service has confirmed that the first week of June is in fact the coldest first week of June *ever.* So those who are complaining have a perfectly good reason to. "Every year this shit happens" is incorrect.

They also said it was likely that today would break a record for lowest high temp on this date.

I'm pretty happy with all this. It's always nice to see the sun once in a while, but I don't really miss it. And anywhere in the 55-75 range is just fine. I haven't had my heat on since early April. Overall, I miss snow about as much as I miss sun, which is not that much. This is only my third spring out here, but obviously I should stay...Seattle has the best weather in the world, as far as I'm concerned.

I am also "one of those people". I lived in Minneapolis till I was nine. I remember summers there well. We'd go to bed naked, with just a sheet for a cover and keep a hairbrush handy to scratch at our bloody mosquito bites. Sweatin' all night. No one but the rich folk had air conditioning then. Moving here was nirvana! I love these gray, cool days. It's cosy! Go to the coffee shop. Or curl up with a good book. Doing housework without the sweat pouring down. This is heaven!
