i saw mueck's "big man" a few years back and found that creepy (http://www.brooklynmuseum.org/exhibitions/ron_mueck/big_man.php). the baby is far more disturbing.

@4, totally agree. I love the crouching boy.

My boss has a poster of the first Mask he did up in her cube and for the longest time I thought it was a photo until she mentioned it was a sculpture. So crazy.

I saw this in person in Edinburgh a year and half or so ago. His stuff is totally amazing. The baby was one of the largest pieces in the exhibit, but not the most interesting to me. There are several hyper-realistic ones that are just ever so slightly oversized or undersized that are really compelling and strange to look at. You almost feel inconsiderate in staring, because it feels like a real person.

@4 Yes, they look just as realistic in person. He uses real hair, and makes incredibly real-looking eyes, and the color in the skin looks so authentic. The exhibit I saw in Edinburgh included "making-of" exhibits that were fascinating.

He used to work in Jim Hensen's Muppets studio, btw.

I saw it at BAM too. It's beautiful and terrifying. The level of detail on his creations is stunning.
