Comments on God Bless the 2nd Amendment
Before today's court decision, you might have called it an accident. All those confusing and a sentence with a built in preamble. Confusing! Accidents are bound to happen. But apparently this kind of thing is exactly what everyone wants. No accident at all.
All those commas, I meant.
Drinking games and fuckin' around with a handgun... Sounds more like natural selection to me. It appears his friends were none too bright as well. We can't protect 'em all, Dan. I haven't had that much handgun training, but I have known since I was 5 not to point ANY gun in my face, no matter if I thought it was empty or not.

Darwinism will out, friends. Just sit back and watch the natural selection (a nice suit of Kevlar wouldn't hurt, either).
Every firearm is always loaded, even if you know for a fact that it's not.
I took a handgun safety class once, here's what I remember:
1. Assume every gun is loaded.
2. Never point a gun at a person.
3. Never point a gun as something you don't want to destroy.
4. Always know what's behind the thing you're going to destroy, so you don't destroy something precious by mistake.
I don't think they actually used the word "precious".
It's ALL fun and games until...oh, nevermind.

Handgun safety? Oxymoron? Just owning a gun increases your chances of being murdered 100 fold.

I love Dan, but I think I've finally figured out his Fatal Flaw: public policy by anecdote.
Be it pit bulls, or hetero/homo parenting, or gun policy, he thinks that throwing out the Perfect Anecdote is a form of civics dialog.

I grew up in Spokane. This is a regular occurrence there. Seriously.
Constitutional so long as it was an accident. I figger, since suicide is still a crime in some jurisdictions, that you don't have the right to shoot yourself on purpose. Anyway, nothing like a good bit o' schadenfreude at the expense of some hick from the other Washington, huh.
And a good thing too! If he'd gotten into a car instead, he might have hurt someone ELSE.
It pretty much always comes back to "people are morons", doesn't it?
This is why I'm uncomfortable around guns. Because people are morons. Especially gun owners.
You know what would be cool? If Dan found gun accidents on the web or had people send them in and then, like then he could start a new feature called: God Bless the 2nd Amendment!
And he'd like just obliterate all those gun lovers with his wicked sense of anecdotal irony.

Am I the only loser on Slog who gets hung up on a totally blank comments page with "Waiting for servedby.advertising.com..." in my browser, and the frigging page won't load? It seems to happen at night. It happens on the Permalink page too, but that page loads the comments and the comment box load before the message, which just continues to run for hours.
Maybe it's my computer telling me to leave off and do something else for a change.

Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office Cpl. Mark Raiche was heading to a call early Sunday morning. As he crested the top of a hill on a rural four-lane road, he saw headlights coming at him.
"I took the last minute to swerve to the right and miss a head-on collision and my car started to overturn," Raiche recalled.
Later, he heard more details. Raiche had rolled four times. He had to be extracted from his patrol car. He was hanging upside down, suspended only by his seat belt, and his engine compartment had caught fire by the time help arrived. He had suffered the worst injuries he'd ever seen on the job. He has a tear in his liver and head and back injuries.
An alleged drunken driver had been traveling in the wrong direction on State Road 85 south of Crestview. As Raiche moved to avoid the SUV and his car began to flip out of control, the other driver didn't stop, according to the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office.
The driver was 33-year-old Scott Allen Brace, a lieutenant with the Ocean City-Wright Fire Department. He was arrested at his home and charged with DUI and leaving the scene of a crash with injury.

I'll just repost this here, since the Second Amendment conversation seems to be a running battle:
The Black Panther Party for Self-Defense was a strong advocate of the Second Amendment, and they used their Second Amendment rights to defend themselves from a racist government that went to extreme lengths to deny African Americans their basic civil rights. It may be argued that firearms were not the most effective tool for that task, or that the Panthers took more harm than good from their use of firearms, but the fact remains that the Panthers used firearms exactly the way the Second Amendment intended. That choice was available to them and they, as free citizens, exercised their rights in that way.Of course there was also MOVE which, while I wouldn't put them in the same category with the Panthers, did expose a heinous recklessness and disregard for human life and the property rights of African Americans on the part of the Philadelphia Police Department.
Just, you know, since nobody else seems to be bringing it up.

Totally, because the statistics show 99% of guns are used to shoot rapists skulking up the stairs towards your sleeping wife.
The other 1% of guns are used to overthrow corrupt governments (little known fact: handguns can easily blow up tanks and aircraft carriers).
Gun laws save so many lives. That's why there are no shootings in DC or Chicago.

And hey hippies: I for one am willing to put up with some accidents to keep the King of England out of our hair, to keep the Canadians from killing our pigs, and to hunt dangerous and delicious animals!

The Kellermann studies recorded correlation, not causation. Just associating with criminals increased your chances of owning a gun 3-8X.
