It tended to begin as part of an aristocratic tradition (though not always...Rembrandt van Rijn springs to mind, and his father was a miller, albeit successful), but is today a very typical construct. You'll find van's and von's in both palaces and housing projects.

Where's a comment by ECB. It shows how much of an Obama hater she is not to take to task the misogyny in this thread. Yes she is attractive, but she is incredibly smart and will be the best first lady we've had since Eleanor Roosevelt.
