End the HIV Travel Ban

posted by on June 26 at 16:30 PM

Having HIV is the “only medical condition that renders people inadmissible to the United States,” John Kerry and Gordan Smith wrote in an op-ed published in yesterday’s Washington Times.

In fact, we are just one of 12 countries that prohibit, almost without exception, HIV-positive non-citizens from entering the country (China has recently overturned its ban). This policy places the United States in the same company as Sudan, Russia, Libya and Saudi Arabia.

Sudan, Russia, Libya, Saudi Arabia—that’s some mighty fine company we’re keeping. But there’s an effort underway in the U.S. Senate to repeal our cruel, regressive, and unnecessary ban on HIV-positive tourists and immigrants. And you’ll never guess who’s leading the charge against this long-overdo repeal? Sen. David Vitter—yes, Vitter the Shitter, the hooker-banging, diaper-wearing “family values” douchebag from Louisiana.

You can help end discrimination against HIV-positive tourists and immigrants by contacting your senators now—before you leave work today—and telling them to support the bipartisan Smith-Kerry HIV Nondiscrimination in Travel and Immigration Act. Contact info for your senators can be found here. And some good background on this issue can be found here, here, here, and here. Andrew Sullivan—who is HIV-positive and an immigrant—is tracking developments at the Daily Dish.

Of course the ban should be repealed. If Andrew Sullivan is already here, what's the point of having that ban now?

Yeah END THE TRAVEL BAN! Those fuckers have no right to deny HIV positives from coming here dammit!
(keep Dan on this, he'll forget about those idiotic Every Child Posts)
Stupid Americans who believe in Jesus and banning people! Stupid Jerks!
(Perfect, don't stop and he'll forget to post the stupid)
I hope we ban Congressmen who buy hookers then!

New studies out today showed gay guys remain the only group unable to bring their HIV rates down.

Tell me again, why are the rest of us supposed to be compassionate about the negligence of others?

If you don't want to transmit HIV, show us you're making an effort, and then maybe we'll let you into the country.

We are twenty years into this and people still are unwilling to do their part.. I don't think anyone who has been infected in the last decade at least (now that the facts are well understood and available everywhere) should be able to come here and transmit some more. They've proven they either don't care or are too stupid to care. That simple - with very, very, very few exceptions.

really @3 ? .. well then let's just ban 'gay guys' from entering the country period, unless they're willing 'to do their part ' and ' show us they're making an effort' and then maybe....
