Charges dropped in career-toppling sex scandalProsecutors have dropped all charges against gay porn model Cody Michael Castagna stemming from a sexual encounter in a Spokane hotel last October with a conservative state lawmaker that ended the Republican’s political career.
Castagna, a 27-year old waiter and part-time porn model, was charged with six felony counts of extortion and theft after the evening with Richard Curtis, a 48-year old Republican legislator from LaCenter, near Vancouver, Wash. Curtis, who opposed gay rights measures as a lawmaker, resigned from the Legislature shortly after the incident last October became public….
Curtis sent a note Monday to Spokane County Deputy Prosecutor Larry Steinmetz saying he didn’t want to testify against Castagna. Steinmetz, supervisor of the Major Crimes unit, proposed the dismissal, which was signed by Superior Court Judge Tari Eitzen.
“My wife, daughters, and son-in-law have paid a very high price for my actions ….My family and I have found ourselves closer as a result and are settled into a new chapter in our lives and are moving past this incident,” Curtis said in his letter.
Prosecutors say that they don’t know where Curtis is and have no way of contacting him.
“I’m stoked,” Castagna said Monday.

Dan - I was in Spokane this weekend (for the Democrats' convention). The Gay Pride Fest was the same weekend. I recalled your story (Was it The Geography of Shame?) as I took it all in - The Hotel Davenport, Dempsey's Brass Rail, Gay Pride in Spokane, Jim West, Out and Proud Democrats vs closeted Republicans, the Pacific Place Mall knock-off. Everyone was very tolerant and polite (oblivious even) to the gay boys & girls running around downtown and Riverfront Park (no counter protesters) and the 45-60 year old gay and lesbian couples. What was missing was that whole 30-something segment of the queer community.
They're not missing...they just all live on Capitol Hill.

I'm assuming that they verified the note actually was from Rep. Curtis before dismissing the charges? If not, there's a fun new way to get out of trouble in Spokane.

Castagna was misquoted. He either said, "I'm toked"
or
