Politics Buy Gas, Get Free Tacos

onHey, it’s not too late to get two free tacos at Jack in the Box today! But there’s a hitch: You have to fill your car with gas. Hey, what’s not to like about a promotion that pushes unhealthy, high-fat food (and promotes neighborhood dead zones with its drive-through restaurants) by incentivizing a practice that destroys the environment? Meanwhile, people who use food stamps—a demographic that disproportionately eats at places like Jack in the Box—are finding it harder and harder to make ends meet as food prices head ever higher.

Are high prices getting to you? Jack in the Box understands, so they'll give you something that only costs a fucking dollar--for free!!
I ride a scooter. It costs me less than five bucks to fill up my tank. Do I still get tacos from the man?
But Erica, you and Dan are positively orgasmic about the high cost of gas, seeing as how it makes you look so smart for riding the bus (or, in Dan's case, having a boyfriend to cart him around when he wants to go skiing or get to the airport). So what if the poor people you refer to can't afford to get to their jobs and can't afford the rising cost of food? How about the housecleaner who is seeing her meager earnings eaten away by the cost of the gas she needs to get to the houses she cleans. Or the landscaper who needs his truck to get to his worksites and carry his equipment (Metro frowns on gardening equipment on buses).
There are a whole lot of people being hurt in the current economy beyond the SUV drivers that you take such glee in bashing. A bit of compassion might be nice.
The round trip to a Jack in the Box would cost me nearly a dollar in gas.
And then I'd have Jack in the Box food.
Food so gross they're giving it away. Total puke fest.
what does jack in the box care about gas? why are they giving their product away to help a completely unrelated industry? this weird corporate overlap gives me the creeps.
i agree with bigyaz that these high gas prices are screwing a lot of people over that truly need their automobiles, but i don't think dan or erica's compassion is going to help them much, nor is a crappy pseudo-taco from some trashy chain "restaurant" or any other stupid promotion.
oh noes, people on food stamps can't have quality food nor can they have a variety in diet...
I really hate the word "incentivize" or "incentivizing".
All the previous commentary is well and good, but hey, free tacos!
You know, as Mr. Poe points out, you can have all the JITB tacos you want for a buck for two. No gas purchases necessary. A dollar! Out of a tank of gas, that's a pretty lousy discount.
You can't buy tacos with food stamps, either.
Jack in the Box tacos always give me gas.
