"Or tomatoes grown at home."

Shouldn't that be obvious? I don't get it.

Remember, pasteurization isn't just for milk ...

@2 I'm confused. Are you suggesting no one should eat raw vegetables anymore? Because while I wouldn't call myself a raw food advocate, and I've never been to one of those raw food restaurants, I do like my raw tomatoes.

Raw tomatoes, sun warmed and fresh off the vine, with a light sprinkling of salt have to be one of the best things about growing tomatoes.

So, are Washington tomatoes on or off the list? Should I be retroactively fearing the tomatoes I got at the farmer's market last weekend?

Poptart, the press release says that tomatoes with the vine still attached are fine, but frankly, I wouldn't worry too much about farmers' market tomatoes. Those come from small farmers, and I think the outbreak is associated with the big farms.

Finally, my hatred of tomatoes is justified!

Thx for the otherwise non-news Jonah

Oh, @ Poptart, Washington tomatoes ARE on the list of potentially contaminated tomatoes. So I guess ... eat at your own peril....? Though, like I said, they specifically say that tomatoes with the vine attached are okay.

At least reference the movie from 1978, not the crappy cartoon spinoff.

Dudes & Dudettes:
THIS IS FUCKING OBVIOUS.
What's missing from the 'OK' list below?

It starts with the letter 'M' and people tend to speak Spanish there.

For some political reason they did not put out a screaming 'M.....n Tomatoes are tainted' release.

But gimme a fucking break, that's what it is saying. A major fraction of tomatoes in the shops in the Western states listed in the FDA scare-sheet comes from that place which is in the opposite direction from Canada.

FDA's Tomato Recommendations

Because of the salmonella outbreak, the FDA advises consumers not to eat raw red Roma, raw red plum, and raw red round tomatoes, or products containing those types of tomatoes, unless the tomatoes are from the following places, which have not been linked to the outbreak:

* Arkansas
* California
* Georgia
* Hawaii
* North Carolina
* South Carolina
* Tennessee
* Texas
* Belgium
* Canada
* Dominican Republic
* Guatemala
* Israel
* Netherlands
* Puerto Rico

The Capitol Hill farmers market tomatoes are grown in a hothouse that does not use pesticides and come from a small farm. I wouldn't worry too much about them.
