It’s nice to see black flâneurie sprouting in Seattle.
As I have written before, whites tend to be coded as flâneurs, city strollers, those who have the time and freedom to move about and absorb city scenes. Blacks, on the other hand, are coded as loiterers, those who hang out on a street corner or in front of a convenience store watching the city go by. Even if the urban practice of loitering has hardened into a custom, a cultural fact, much of it crumbles when more and more of the city opens up, when one is free to move about, when one can go and see this and that scene.
I prefer to be an auteur not a haineur.

Now that the Hip-Hip Nation is finally usurping the Daydream Nation, maybe now we all can simply practice the Dérive instead.

I'm a little confused. Charles seems to be suggesting that black me should be allowed to walk the streets, as this fellow was. That's a pretty radical point of view all right, for 1608 -- not 2008.
Charles, no one outside of France is coded as flaneurs besides blatant blatant homosexuals.

I've been white all my life, and I've never flaneured anything. I've filleted, and flambéed, and even done a naughty bit of fricaseeing, but I've never flaneured.
I musta missed a day at White School. Was probably the same day they explained why I was supposed to like Seinfeld.
