“4-year-old out of surgery after shooting self at Sam’s Club”

posted by on June 9 at 16:18 PM

Grandma’s got a gun, via WIS News 10:

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Authorities say a four-year-old girl from Salley is recovering after she grabbed a gun out of her grandmother’s purse and shot herself in the Harbison Blvd. Sam’s Club Monday.

The child underwent emergency surgery Monday afternoon at Palmetto Health Richland Memorial Hospital.

Lewis says no major organs were hit by the bullet, and the child is out of surgery and in the recovery room right now. The hospital says she’s in stable condition.

Investigators tell WIS News 10’s Stewart Moore they believe the child was sitting in her grandmother’s shopping cart when she pulled a small-caliber handgun out of her grandmother’s shopping cart and accidentally shot herself in the chest.

The entire incident was captured on surveillance cameras near the store’s pharmacy.

(Thanks for the horrific story, Alissa!)

Tragic, but unavoidable, a well-regulated militia being necessary.

Is it just me or does the story read like they're trying to blame Sam's Club?

If they're not blaming Sam's Club, they should be.

is fucking sam's club that goddamn dangerous??

Apparently so. If only there'd been more people with guns there--they could have shot the kid before she hurt anyone.

you're never too young (or too old) for firearm safety training.

As horrible as the story is, it's still kinda funny.

#1: I, for one, welcome our new well-regulated grandma militia overlords.

Did the kid have a concealed weapons permit?

@2, that's what i said.

That Sam's Club is in my old neighborhood, just down the street from the high school where a few weeks ago the principal retired instead of leading a school that is going to engage in the ungodly act of allowing a GSA.

Y'know, i just don't miss that place.

Have you seen the people who shop at Sam's club?

If the kid had been hit by granny's car, would that be news?

See, now if everyone had the right to carry a concealed weapon, this never would have happened. Gun control is to blame!

Oh, wait, I guess that lame-ass argument doesn't quite work here. I guess it doesn't quite work ... ever.

and with the safety off, obviously, meaning: grandma could have easily shot herself or anyone else just by sticking her stupid old hand into her stupid old purse at any stupid old moment.

The grandma shouldnt have left her purse unattended with a gun inside. Ever heard of an ankle holster lady? Jesus.

I love the South!

"Hey grandma, remember when that time when I was four and you couldn't be bothered to keep your eye on me long enough for me to find your gun in your purse and then shoot myself with it? That was awesome."

One should never leave one's purse in a shopping cart, it makes it vulnerable to theft. If the purse contains a gun then one has armed a criminal. There is a silver lining to this happily non-fatal accident: we are all very lucky that this incident brought to light the grandmother's carelessness and no criminal was able to obtain that gun.
