Unbecoming Behavior

posted by on May 6 at 13:51 PM

Dozens of San Diego State University students were arrested after a sweeping drug investigation found that some fraternity members openly dealt drugs and one even sent a mass text message advertising cocaine, authorities said Tuesday.

Two kilograms of cocaine were seized, along with 350 Ecstasy pills, marijuana, psychedelic mushrooms, hash oil, methamphetamine, illicit prescription drugs, several guns and at least $60,000 in cash, authorities said…. Those arrested included a student who was about to receive a criminal justice degree and another who was to receive a master’s degree in homeland security….

Shawn Collinsworth, executive director of the national office of Phi Kappa Psi, said he was told by two of the SDSU fraternity chapter’s leaders that four of its members were arrested. He added the fraternity is cooperating with the investigation.

“It isn’t behavior becoming of Phi Kappa Psi,” Collinsworth said.

Poor bastards. Full story here.

THIS is why the war on drugs is such bull shit. I wonder ... they should do a study to see how many educations have been paid for through illicit substances.

My father told me something about drugs, and the enforcement of them. It undermines peoples respect for the law. Obviously people who aspire to work in law, and show that they have no respect for the law demonstrates how much respect people have for anti-drug legislation.

Maybe the whole culture war thing undermines peoples respect for the law and authority in general.

What the hell is a "master's degree in homeland security"? Does that give you an extra special education in hunting down brown people or something?

An interesting question here is whether or not fraternity members can legally be considered a "gang."

Homeland Security Degree

@10

The homeland security master's is part of the school of business' information and decision systems department. It's about IT security.

As a grad of SDSU, I have to say I'm not surprised. The fraternities there have until now gotten away with murder: hooker parties, underage drinking, etc. - a tragedy waiting to happen. And most of the frat boys I remember were just as obnoxious as their upper middle class, Orange County, spoiled brat backgrounds.

As I recall, they kind of feed upon themselves. Most other students at SDSU just look at them, roll their eyes, and head for class. I'd be all for kicking the Greek system off campus. What would the school lose? An annual bake sale or auction for some worthy cause?

@14

would they ever have group sex with hookers?

I never use drugs when sweeping, because I'm worried about sweeping drug arrests.

It's nice to see that San Diego journalists are stupid fucking hacks who are every bit as credulous as the ones in Seattle.

Maybe it's just me, but everytime I read a story like this I can't help but think of all those yummy drugs that I won't be able to buy now.

@12.
Yes, they would fit the legal definition of a "drug dealing gang", except for the major disqualifier of being white & rich.

You want "elitist"? Look no farther than the fraternity system, especially at private schools.

I used to work/study @ UPS when the Sigma Alpha Epsilon frat (no longer on that campus, I believe) had a party that resulted in their baby grand piano being tossed from the deck into a stone lined pit some 15+ ft below. We had to clean up the mess, and some frat boy's rich daddy just bought them another piano to replace it.
The cost of that piano would have paid for a semester's tuition at the time.

Those jerks are probably VP's in their daddys' companies today. I get to vent on SLOG.

my friend got a degree in homeland security. for his final thesis he photographed minorities on ferries and assessed their terrorist quotient.

@20 My experience with frat boys is yes ... they are pompous arogant pricks, who spend shit loads of their parents money and blow it up their nose.

But honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if there is ONE guy in this situation is a true victim. Someone who doesn't have rich parents, but know that sadly ... in this day and age you need contacts to succeed in the high stakes business world and where you make them is in the shit fraternity system. Yet tuition and fraternity dues are not cheap, and drug money is plentiful ...

I'm just saying, I think there is an exception to this one. I've known a few (I don't think they would put a text out to the campus!)

I'm sorry, I wouldn't be surprised if there is ONE exception.

But yes, the majority of these people are douche bags.

@19

I feel that way too.

On the plus side date rape is going to go WAY down at SDSU.

@20 Ah yes the SAEs at UPS, would that have been the same year that they got naked, covered themselves in shaving cream and ran around campus screaming "I'm a giant sperm"? Or perhaps they did that every year...

@18: Are you saying that this isn't newsworthy? That the journalists are "hacks" because they reported this in an unbiased fasion?
