And that howling mob of young men marching up Pike Street, throwing rocks and bottles at the police -- "just standing around".

Didn't do any of those things? If you stand with the mob, you are the mob. You can't pick and choose.

Fuck the WTO protesters, fuck them hard, fuck them forever. Your little nicks and bruises are unimpressive to me. Being forced to sit in a hot bus for a couple of hours -- oh, my, how terrible.

The trailer for this was interesting until they started talking. Then the taglines... "some came for a conference, some came to protest..."

I sucked in a pretty good bit of downwind smoke one of those days while waiting for the bus to go work for the man. Shit feels like bees in your lungs. City during WTO = blowing it. "Protestors" = blowing it just as hard.

Well, as long as you're going to bring Hitler into it, his goons were "standing up for what they believe is right" too -- and they resembled the WTO rioters a lot more than I do. If violence, assault, and rampant property destruction is what you believe is right, then you SHOULD be teargassed.

My views are somewhat colored by my fondness for the WTO, of course. But even if I hated peaceful trade organizations as much as you lot do, the actions of the mob are always, always, always wrong.

Did the things I mentioned happen, stinkbug? Yes. Yes, they did. Everyone in that mob is guilty of the crimes of any single member of that mob. That's how mobs work.

I applaud the police for the restraint they showed that weekend.

Fnarf, that might make sense if it reflected reality. There were broken windows and a few people doing other stupid things, but the police beat the shit out of hundreds of people who were nowhere near any protester violence. The police reaction had nothing to do with protester violence, and everything to do with people gathering in the streets.

Protest free zones? Tear gassing peaceful protesters (of whom there were 10's of thousands, as opposed to a couple of dozen anarchist idiots)? Following protesters who were dispersing up into the residential neighborhoods of Capitol Hill and using tear gas below people's windows there?

so, um, how are you defining "mob"? You do realize that the WTO protest wasn't a 2-hour protest in a single block? Were the shoppers and workers who paused to watch police whack people (sitting on the ground) also guilty? You do realize that police "started it" by gassing protesters before any window, etc was broken? You do realize that nearly all of the window smashing, etc was done by a specific group roaming around? (And yes, some people tried stopping them.)

...and FNARF, I repeat the question another poster asked above, where you actually there, or did you just watch the hyperventilating local coverage on KING/KIRO/KOMO, et al, where they had the breaking of a single Starbucks window playing on an endless loop?

Mr. X: even though the MSM had the typical sucky coverage, soon after everything ended KIRO had an hour-long show that basically showed the timeline of events for all the days. It was pretty helpful in showing that there wasn't a "mob" running around breaking windows at the get-go. That "violence" was pretty isolated.

I still think the trailer for that film should have just been a 30-second slo-mo shot of that Renton cop kicking that random dude in the nuts outside of Bartell's on Broadway. Maybe that's the climax of the film and they didn't want to give it away?

The Venezuelan trade ambassador and the Governor of Iowa were physically assaulted outside the Convention Center long before the first tear gas went off.

Protests (and the mob subset) are usually the only option left to those boxed out by the law which is subsequently armored by the police and the military as needed. I mean, that's just the classic set-up.

One of my ex-friends was one of the stupid idiots who "broke the starbucks window". He didn't get off lightly. He recieved a 10K fine and a felony charge. He didn't even break the window, he was just pushing more glass into that starbucks.

I told him he got a shitty lawyer for a punishment that large for such as stupid crime.

PS To Fnarf: There were over 30K people protesting and only maybe 100 that caused violence. I think the WTO is a great organization, however there were mistakes made by both sides. And yes, I agree with the cops restraint. They were pretty mild given the circumstances.

@2 - darn, I had a spare ticket, Original Monique, that I ended up giving away - you could have joined our krewe ... and my ex got pepper-sprayed and gassed while she was walking to work for the City of Seattle in her dress and high heels, so it wasn't just rioters that got attacked, Fnarf.

I would only go to this premiere if it was guaranteed that I could meet the infamous MRF.

I saw the film at a previous festival. Not sure what movie the reviewer was watching, but it wasn't the film I saw. Just goes to show how you can never make everybody happy. This film is quite excellent, possibly even Oscar-worthy I'd say. See it yourselves with an open mind and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Why did the National Guard follow those kids up Pine Street? I thought the "no protest zone" was downtown by the WTO meetings.

People WERE assaulted and pepper sprayed for walking around on BROADWAY. The National Guard marched as far as Broadway & Roy.

This ain't the first time we've had the WTO argument here on Slog and I'm sad to see that Fnarf continues to stick by his spectacularly misinformed ideas about what actually happened downtown and his peculiar view of collective guilt.

I was tear-gassed on Broadway and Republican, walking home from work.
