In solidarity with the thousands dead in Burma/Myanmar, I have decided not to wear my cashmere robe and slippers for a whole week.

(Disclaimer: Do these items exist? That actually doesn't sound terribly comfortable)

I know it's a close call, but that may be the most idiotic thing to come out of his mouth in the last eight years.

Maybe he should give up opening his GD mouth. That would help us all!

Reminds me how we were told to continue shopping in order to not let the terrorists win. Isn't that sending the wrong message? I'm sure that the 9-11 families appreciated our sacrifices back then as well.

Dang.

There go sales of exploding golf balls ...

Why does he hate the American economy so very very much?

You know what else sends the wrong signal? Killing her son for no goddamn reason.

It's weird how we are. Mountain biking and clearing brush don't make bad visuals for our "wartime president" but golf does. Lots and lots of middle class (meathead) men like golf though. I think the problem is that it gives the appearance that you have all day to while away strolling from one tee to the next. While the concentrated energy of the bike or the landscaping don't make you look like you're pissing away time.

But mostly @2 nailed it. Not going to repeat Poppy's mistake.

Not that it matters, but... if you read the article you'll see that he gave up golf in 2003, not just the other day.

All this is needless and fermented Bush bashing. Bush was talking about PR and image in relation to golf. It's not that he feels that giving up golf helps him atone for anything. If you recall from history, Eisenhower got bad press for all the golf he played and every golf-loving president since has been haunted by that (except Bill Clinton, perhaps).

Oh, well that makes it all better then.

Maybe he gave up golf because he sucks at it and doesn't much like it? I'm going to give up smashing my thumb with a hammer until the Mariners win the pennant, OK?

But tap dancing on the steps of the white house in front of the press, thats ok? Weird.

I'd be a hell of a lot more convinced if he showed solidarity by sending one of his own children to fight in his oh-so-important-for-the-future-of-this-country war.

Oh - no - wait. That's for those 'other' people to do. I forgot.

Out of respect to the families he should give up breathing. At least until the war is over.

Easier to give up golf (i've done it many many times!) to show his leadership and gravitas than, say, attend a soldier's funeral. Does anyone know if he's made it to a funeral yet?

We really need to stop calling it a war. It isn't a war, and never was a war. It's an illegal invasion of one sovereign country by another.

For me, the scariest quotation from the interview was this gem. Bush has absolutely no sense of history. "I guess some presidencies are kind of — were real smooth, there were no real big issues. Well, that's not the way mine is."

Posted by Erick | May 13, 2008 7:06 PM

yeah. giving up golf, that's a delightful idea.

frankly, if my child died in iraq, i'd be a lot less pissed off if the president was golfing occasionally, rather than vacationing every other fucking weekend. cos that looks even better...

I'm sure his thoughtful actions are of great comfort to those who have lost a loved one in "the war against terror." Well, my son is dead, but Pres. B. lost his golf. ho hum.
What a complete and total dick.

@17: Raindrop, you're an idiot. I hope no one out there is confusing you with me.

Since it doesn't look like impeachment is going to happen I wonder what will happen to Bush on January 21, 2009? He should not be allowed to simply go to his ranch in Texas and write a book and go on the lecture circuit like other ex-presidents (not that he can write, but you get my point). Too many of his ex-cronies (Rumsfeld and Gonzales, for example) offered their resignations when they got in trouble, slipped out of the spotlight and are now living quiet lives in obscurity without ever truly answering for what they did. Yes, his legacy will suck to future generations. He will make Nixon look like Lincoln. But will he ever see the inside of a jail cell as he should? I hope a year from now the next president and congress makes sure he does.

He is an known alcoholic = missing parts in the brain and he got to be president of the USA!?!
What an insult his actions (giving up GOLF?!?!)is to those how have lost a loved one.

Accorrding to dan, "to stop Islamo-fascism, we're going to have to roll back all of the tyrannous and dictatorial regimes in the Middle East while simultaneously waging war against a militant, deadly religious ideology." --Savage, 2002

I guess he'll be giving up golf for awhile.
