If HPV puts men at risk of oral cancer, and the way they get the oral cancer is through oral infection.....
then sadly, I think the more immediate and short-term effect of this will be more asshole dudes explaining that they can't go down on girls because they might get mouth cancer. And the world doesn't need less guys going down on girls, it needs more (talented guys)!

When did we move into bizarro-world, where President Bush is right about the Strategic Oil Reserve and both Democratic presidential candidates are totally wrong? Do these people not realize what an emergency stockpile is for? It makes me crazy.

@1: What the world needs is insurance coverage of HPV vaccines for everybody - boys and men included.

There are over 100 different varieties of HPV. And not all of them are sexually transmitted. The vaccine is only effective against about 70 strains. So before you get your panties all twisted about "nothing being done about it," maybe you should realize that there's no quick, easy fix.

Ugh. Why the fuck does Amanda Marcotte always turn everything into a screechy feminist issue? I couldn't stand Pandagon once she replaced Ezra Klein.

Does anyone else think those gutter cleaning robots in the ads on the side think they look like sex toys for women?

The Chinese government is worried about aftershocks, so they're making people sleep on the streets rather than allowing them to go home (in the cases where they still have homes)? I've never been in an earthquake, but I've always heard that going outside during them is a bad idea.

I wonder which is/was a worse place to be "placed" after a disaster: Post-Katrina Superdome or Jiuzhou Gymnasium?

@9: Trying to go outside during the earthquake is a bad idea. Trying to go back inside after the earthquake is an even worse idea.

Greg:
Do you really think we're in an emergency situation when it comes to our oil supply?? I sure haven't seen any lines at the pumps yet...

@11: That is exactly my point. We're not in a real emergency right now. A real emergency would be an oil embargo, the kind of thing that would pretty much shut down the U.S. economy instantly if we didn't have a reserve stock of oil to use. Since this is not that serious, stopping shipments to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve is useless pandering to dumb voters.

What makes me crazy is that Bush is taking the sensible view, while 97 members of the Senate (including both Hillary and Barack) are taking the dumb view.
