Saturday morning KUOW mentioned that a UW study showed that highway traffic in Washington is down in 2008 from 2006, even though population and jobs are greater. I wish I could find a link.

Anyway, as always, IMHO it's important to note the effect of higher gas prices: less driving and more hunger for transit alternatives. If everyone is going to drive less as prices rise, we hardly need more lane-miles. And the days of cheap gas are gone for good; anybody who says otherwise works for Forbes or the National Review.

Those HOT lanes are a great revenue-generating gimmick on the part of the DOT; a new excuse for ticketing confused drivers and making everyone's lives on the roads even more miserable. I like the part about the transponder just invisibly assessing you fees when you violate, like a bank tacking random charges on your monthly statement.

I drove on 167 to get to my mother's house for the holiday yesterday. I honestly could not figure out how the HOT lanes work. Do I need a transponder to get in the lanes at all, or am I OK as a carpool? The signage is no help at all. The only clear message was "don't cross the double white lines." I get that, and could figure out that there were occasional entry and exit points. The price of the lanes was also clear--50 cents in the morning and no fee "open to all vehicles" on the way back last night. But is that all vehicles really, or only all vehicles that have the transponder?

One in three women in the military is raped. And the military basically does nothing about it. I don't think there is any more to say about that.

Actually, they actively discourage filing of charges and bury them most of the time, @8.

No, I read the article, which states that nearly all women in the military experience harassment and about a third are raped. I don't need to have worn a uniform to condemn the armed forces' shitty, shitty system.

The cars we should be making are being made in India. Another of the Republican's legacies. We move backward to appease the right wing just when the rest of the world takes off for the future! Shameful!
