Charles, I agree...his ouvre doesn't send me any overarching message (though it's certainly not crap), but this work is amazing.

Holl specializes in buildings that are intended to enchant in photographs, or from a million miles away. They are not, however, intended to serve useful functions in well-knit urban environments. Notice here the vast amount of vibrant street life and community.

More than half of the area of downtown Kansas City is surface parking or street -- featureless asphalt. Charming, I'm sure.

The people of KC are very proud of that building. If it pleases them it should be counted as a success since they have to live with it.

I was just there a few weeks ago. That addition is completely at odds with the original Nelson-Atkins, and it's pretty jarring. I say it's a failure, though this pic of it is amazing.

@12 - we know. I am opposed to squirrels pelting you with nuts from trees in large parks, on the grounds that it's a waste of good nuts.

Mr. Poe, the reflecting pool is great for public sex, at night, when they turn the lights down low ... but avoid the squirrels, they're all carrying mange.

actually, you are looking at the parking garage. it's under the water, and one may view the sky through the water via those white openings. seeing the plans before they began i was quite afraid, but it all works much better than i ever thought it would.
