Slog - Comments on The Edwards Endorsement

Just watched a livestream of John Edwards endorsing Barack Obama. First thoughts: Edwards could have talked about himself a little less and the crowd in Michigan could have booed Clinton a lot less. Also, I don't know that I saw a natural pairing when these two were on the stage together. It didn't look as if Edwards was really enjoying sharing the stage, for one thing, and more importantly hearing them both speak one after another reminded me how similar their core messages are—both talk about uniting America, getting beyond old divisions, changing the way politics is played in Washington,...

I was assuming they'd go with a crusty old white guy to pair with obama, but the fact that edwards looks extremely waspy, and has his whole 'look, my wife has breast cancer' thing could be an attraction for the democrats to ensure they don't lose any women-vote

Not meaning this to be cynical as much as realistic politics...

For what is worth (not much, I know) Edwards is why I was voting against Bush rather than for Kerry in '04, yea, subtle difference, and in WA wouldn't have made any difference how I voted for president (though Gregoire is probably happy I voted Democrat)

This time the Slog is why I'll be voting for McCain, I don't have anything against a first term senator who sounds like a broken record, hey, I thought invading Iraq was stupid too, but some of the the Obamatrons here are just over the top, still, Mr. $400 haircut makes it that much easier to vote for the winner this time.

Comment by Grant Cogswell

Bill Richardson or Jim Webb. Unfortunately Hillary has proved this country is more backward than we thought, and a Black/Hispanic ticket might be too much for the drifting Republicans Obama might catch. Wesley Clark? Joe Biden would be a good choice with his foreign policy credentials, but Delaware is in the middle of everything and would get him exactly nothing. Plus, we need two YOUNG men (or women - not you, Hillary) up there to highlight how old McCain and whatever cadaver - Charlie Crist? - he's bringing onstage with him are. Webb's a veteran, his son's in Iraq, he's young(ish) and managed to win a Senate seat in Virginia, first Dem in I don't know how long.

Unfortunately, I don't think anyone much cares what John Edwards thinks. There's something about that guy people don't like, as right as he is on the issues. I totally agree with him on just about everything, yet count myself in that camp. The guy just rubs me the wrong way. Still it's good to get a nice inevitability hit once a day. Keep 'em comin.

I was surprised by the booing. I've never heard booing of Clinton at any Obama speech, and I've seen a lot of them. But then it ocurred to me that Michigan Obama supporters have had to listen to Clinton going on and on about the importance of Michigan, and how Michigan's primary results should be accepted because we don't want to disenfranchise them. So Michigan Obama supporters didn't even get a chance to vote for him, and now the votes of the other candidate are supposed to be counted in the name of enfranchisement?

I would be booing myself hoarse.
