Slog - Comments on SIFF 2008: Day 9 Recommendations

Early this afternoon, we've got another three-way contest between Kiss the Bride (4:30 pm at the Egyptian) ("horrible," a reader wrote me, though see also Adrian's gay-Morm-orrific interview with the director), Ask Not (4:30 pm at the Harvard Exit), and Bigger, Stronger, Faster* (4:15 pm at Pacific Place). Another friendly reminder: Avoid SIFF Cinema. They're playing stunted movies—I mean, "short films"—through Sunday evening. Later, the decision is between the high-school nostalgia trip American Teen (7 pm at the Egyptian)--it's opening in Seattle in August, but on the other hand, it should be a juicy Q&A with director Nanette Burstein--and the...

Shinji relentlessly cries, whines, screams, moans...these are all of the reasons Evangelion became completely unwatchable for me.

Comment by Will in Seattle

Shinji has big anime eyes and expresses both the frustration of teens alienated from their dads, outdone in the physical realm by girls he's still confused about and can't help feeling attracted too, and deals with his rebellion against his authoritarian and religiously scientific doctrines and the fact that his mom has become a literal monster that he must combine with to fight, and the girl he secretly loves is one in a series of clones that represent his true soulmate.

Plus, his eyes are girl eyes and he's slender as heck.

Which is why this movie is a Must Not Miss for myself and all my friends, and those avoiding the film are not hard core enough to watch real anime that rips your guts out with its beauty and insights.

It doesn't matter, Will. No reason or depth behind his characteristics warrant the fact that there is never a single fucking moment where Shinji is likable. He is a constant failure, he is annoying as fuck, and all I can think about is how much his insanity is driving me insane.

What hurt the most was having to see everybody else deal with him. Poor fucking Asuka. Poor fucking Rei. Poor fucking Rei x50,000.

Shinji is more whiny than Luke Skywalker. That entire series would have been better without his annoying ass always crying and feeling sorry for himself.

Get some balls Shinji! Ugh.

But that said, I love Evangelian. And may even go watch it tomorrow.
