He really wanted to be a Jesuit it seems.

It's cool and props and all, but the Caņon City Daily Record was the newspaper that broke this story. Chris Kissel found their story and linked to it. He won the Internet race, which is awesome, but is winning the Internet race "scooping the dailies?"

Franz ran unsuccessfully for the WA state legislature in 2006 as (drumroll, please) ... a Republican.

I guess he really, really doesn't want to get deployed to Iraq.

Maybe SU needs to adopt a no-Republican hiring policy.

I agree with Fnarf. There are tons of Dems with combat service they could have hired.

Erica, way to turn a story about enticing a child for sex into a dig at the dailies (even if you were incorrect as to who scooped who).

You must really enjoy the taste of your own foot.

Maybe I have a perverse sense of humor, but I have to laugh when I think of a sexual predator FLYING to meet his/her (his) victim. The predator is imagining all sorts of things that they will do. The excitement. The anticipation of the forbidden meeting. And the climax of the story, waiting at the destination? A fat, adult police officer, with big fists, waiting to arrest.

This is somewhat of a less impressive "news break" since the university sent out a massive email about it to everyone on campus before that story was published.

SU did not hire him, Franz was appointed to the ROTC program by the U.S. Army as an employee of a Virginia company called Communications Technologies, which provides personnel to the Department of Defense for ROTC programs around the country.

How can anyone still believe they are actually going to meet up with (insert fixation here) after all of the publicity these stings engender?

Will in Seattle @7:

I agree with Fnarf.
Oh yeah, that went in to a SlogTip.

He'd just gotten married? Hmmm. Poor wife.

Fuck! These past few days have been disastrous for my academic institutions. First was the SDSU scandal and now this. Should I have saved a huge amount of dough and gotten my degrees online at University of Phoenix?

How many Slog posts stem from, or at least link to, a "print" media source? Or if the source is another blog, that blogger found a link to another blog, which found the story at a TV or print media site?

Maybe SU needs to adopt a no-ROTC policy.

@6 - su is pretty openly hostile to republicans already. conservative students often complain of a hostile environment.

@16 - the rotc building at su was torched in the 60s

correction:

The unrest was not without its spectacular side. On January 19, 1970, a bomb went off between the Garrand and Liberal Arts buildings. In March of that year, arsonists set fire to Xavier Hall, timed to the appearance of Barry Goldwater on campus. In one final act of violence, on May 6, 1972, a large bomb exploded beneath the steps of the ROTC building, blowing out every window on the facing side of Loyola Hall. Miraculously, in all of these incidents, no one was injured.

Hostility good. Bombs bad. That was almost forty years ago.

Heck, Sen McCain is so old his wife was getting high on acid when I was a baby.

Oh, sorry, meant his mistress - his wife was at home with the two little girls he was not being a good father to.

Please explain how this is a basis for judging ROTC programs.

He is actually a great person, it was completely shocking for me to hear this. Hopefully he doesn't have prior victims. Hopefully the good people at SU's rotc program can move on.

What in the world is ROTC doing on the campus of a Jesuit University? That just doesn't make sense given the mission of service to God and humanity that the university represents. Perhaps there are some old-school alumni who would be unhappy if ROTC left campus.
