Slog - Comments on Sea Lions Executed

It looks like we've got another serial killer on the loose. The deaths of six sea lions are under investigation after the bodies of the federally protected animals were found in closed traps on the Columbia River and appeared to have been shot. The carcasses of four California sea lions and two Steller's sea lions were found Sunday about noon. The discovery came one day after three elephant seals were found shot to death at a breeding ground in Central California. All three species are federally protected by the Marine Mammal Protection Act. But Steller's sea lions also are protected...

Yeah, but the sea lions that were killed were probably not the problem sea lions from the areas where they were a problem. It's more likely they were random sea lions minding their own sea lion business. And, in addition, two of the sea lions were Steller's, which are really really endangered, and also not even the same species as the ones bothering the salmon.

It is salmon season (munching season). And these guys were not just minding their own business. They were in traps placed to catch salmon munching sealions. Now shooting them in the trap is pretty low. They were probably going to be moved back to California.

Reality is, these smart little devils come back each year and bring their friends to an area they don't really normally frequent and put their dent in the run. Shooting the smart ones might sound counter productive, especially to sea world fans, but it will ultimately reduce the numbers that come.

But in the end, the real problem with low salmon runs is commercial ocean (over)fishing.

We could easily maintain the dams we use for hydroelectric power and viable salmon runs of we managed our other water resources better -- particularly as relates to cover for smaller rivers and streams, leaving wetlands intact and managing runoff from impermeable surfaces and construction sites. Residential lawns and lawn watering systems should also be outlawed in all of Western Washington.

Ultimately, hydroelectric dams do more to protect the environment than they do to harm it. But if we're going to use them, we have to regulate our other water resources much more heavily.

@10, overfishing is only part of the story. The biggest part, by far, is habitat destruction, all those riverside homes that wreck the spawning beds, the clearcuts that rain mud down on the rivers, the pavement of the entire region that turns every little salmon stream into a raging culvert.

And the dams.

"Dorothy Screws "witnessed her only son, U.S. Army Pvt. Tommie Edward Jones, commit suicide right before her eyes six weeks ago in Colorado.

One thing Screws and her family did not know until after her son’s death — which occurred March 25 at Fort Carson, Colo. — was that Jones, 27, had Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) from when he fought in Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2007"

But war is good for children. Dan Savage told us that in his pro-war October 2002 article which I can't name here because the SLOG spam filter will block this post. Funny huh? SLOG uses a spam filter to block references to a pro-war article by Dan Savage.

“War may be bad for children and other living things, but there are times when peace is worse for children and other living things, and this is one of those times.”

“In the meantime, invading and rebuilding Iraq will not only free the Iraqi people, it will also make the Saudis aware of the consequences they face if they continue to oppress their own people while exporting terrorism and terrorists. The War on Iraq will make it clear to our friends and enemies in the Middle East (and elsewhere) that we mean business: Free your people, reform your societies, liberalize, and democratize… or we’re going to come over there, remove you from power, free your people, and reform your societies for ourselves

Comment by RHETT ORACLE

There are so many contradictions that come to mind with this reportage. A few months ago, the Makah (sic) Indians up on the Olympic Peninsula were charged with killing a whale - a whale that is in their wailiwick and more or less fair game, given the tribe's traditions and treaty rights.

On the other alternatively stupid hand, people (us - who adore salmon - dead and poached) get all cocked-hat when sea lions continue to eat the fish we like to eat. The gall - the termerity of those selfish sea lions - those shellfish she-lions. How dare they eat what lives in the same water as they.

Certain humans who are richer and more selfish and entitled than their brothers will soon find a way to kill lesser humans who are breathing too much air - rich people's air. Oh, wait - we're already doing that. And Barack has to disown 'the reverend right'...for essentially being right. Oh how much balder there is to dash!
