In 1953, the young upstart Rauschenberg took a drawing by the elder de Kooning, erased it, and put the blank page on display inside a golden frame for all the world to see. Abstract expressionism was dead and had been swept offstage, and the audience was primed and ready for a new generation—the generation of Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol: Pop. Erased de Kooning Drawing is a breath between movements, a final metaphorical slaying of a...

Wow. Thats a great Obit. There are not a lot of folks in my day to day life whom I can share my true admiration for Mr. Rauschenberg without getting some raised eyebrows. Starting in high school and moving all through art school I always felt a strong affinity for all of his work. Particularly some of his later highly technical printmaking pieces. It was very nice to see some of my feelings for his work put so succinctly. Thanks!

speaking of DeKooning, anyone notice that the best painting in the SAM's collection, DeKooning's "Pink Woman", has been put in storage?

They also have NO Guy Andersons on display.

That's some bullshit.

A very nice remembrance. Thanks, Jen.

I, too, was shocked, though I guess I shouldn't be considering his age. Though, I hadn't realized that Rauschenberg was as old as my grandfather, who also died just recently. It is a testament to the power of his ideas and their contemporary resonance that in my mind's eye Rauschenberg is still an iconoclastic twenty-something.
