Dear Paul Constant,

they don't have wives...or girlfriends. They're dressed as comic book super heros.

Sincerely,
Y.F.

Around xmas time I saw a young superhero on the monorail. He was alone, dressed in a long black coat, and I can't remember if he had a Lone Ranger-type mask or just a black hat, but on the back of his coat was mounted a fighting staff. As the monorail passed the EMP, he drew his staff and faced down the giant bug perched over the science fiction museum entrance. After we passed the bug and docked, he slung the staff onto his back, darted out of the train and off into the darkness.

Anyone know anything about this guy?

ha ha I read "people who dress up like superheroes to protect Lake City" Then I thought maybe a little excessive... But no not really.

Oni says they are working to gain legal status as a non-profit organization. “As soon as we do that, it’ll open up a lot more doorways for us so we can start receiving money and we can help more people,”

So they can, uh, help more people by doing nothing, only with funding from strangers?

Hilarious article, Mr. Constant. Only in America.

@4 : You are right. It wouldn't be any stranger than some of the things I've seen in Lake City. With the yuppification of Fremont and Ballard, Lake City's really one of the last truly fucked-up and weird neighborhoods left in Seattle.

Word on the street is that there will be a documentary on these folks playing at STIFF 2008. I also heard a rumor that local comedian Danielle Radford would be busting into the Q&A dressed as a super villian. It is tough to substantiate such wild speculation though. You know how rumors go.

That reminds me. Anyone seen Link around Capitol Hill lately?

By "These people" I mean a set of people who dress up in spandex and patrol their city as super heros. I don't know for sure that they are the same superheros as the ones in this photo.

Salt Lake City. Brave souls indeed. Do they roam the streets looking for perps trying to buy beer on Sunday? I'd like to see them protect Detroit or DC dressed like that.

@12: I don't know about Detroit, but there is a team of real life superheroes in DC. I can't remember their names right now. They're not as...dark..as the Black Monday Society, though. More red, white, and blue themed.

@13 - This probably isn't what you're talking about, but here's a funny pic of Rummy doing some Iraq War planning.

Good picture but, no: It's the Capital City Supersquad, including Captain Prospect, the DC Guardian, Justice, Nice Ninja, the Puzzler, and others.

Forgive me, but it doesn't seem like it's so far-fetched that these masked justice-dispensers foiled an evil drug-addled man abusing his mother...I'd probably stop anything (and I mean anything) I was doing if I laid eyes on this...add drugs and the outcome is solidified.

Are you sure you don't mean Black Rock City?

Paul, that was a good read. At the same time, it did seem like these guys are so boring you had a hard time really getting color from them. And that's a bad thing, considering they're dressed up in costumes and shit.

By overall, I'm a geek at heart and I was highly entertained. I just felt kinda depressed after reading it. lol.
