Slog - Comments on Real Life Superheroes

I took the above photograph of the Black Monday Society, a team of people who dress up like superheroes to protect Salt Lake City, back in November. This week, in the Salt Lake City Weekly, I write about them. I have some problems with the photos--I can't believe that they use sound effects to illustrate the story when I write in the story about how lazy news outlets use comic book sound effects to punch up the stories about real life superheroes--but I'm happy to finally have the piece see the light of day. If you're interested in grown...

Around xmas time I saw a young superhero on the monorail. He was alone, dressed in a long black coat, and I can't remember if he had a Lone Ranger-type mask or just a black hat, but on the back of his coat was mounted a fighting staff. As the monorail passed the EMP, he drew his staff and faced down the giant bug perched over the science fiction museum entrance. After we passed the bug and docked, he slung the staff onto his back, darted out of the train and off into the darkness.

Anyone know anything about this guy?

Oni says they are working to gain legal status as a non-profit organization. “As soon as we do that, it’ll open up a lot more doorways for us so we can start receiving money and we can help more people,”

So they can, uh, help more people by doing nothing, only with funding from strangers?

@4 : You are right. It wouldn't be any stranger than some of the things I've seen in Lake City. With the yuppification of Fremont and Ballard, Lake City's really one of the last truly fucked-up and weird neighborhoods left in Seattle.

Comment by Who Can Say for Sure?

Word on the street is that there will be a documentary on these folks playing at STIFF 2008. I also heard a rumor that local comedian Danielle Radford would be busting into the Q&A dressed as a super villian. It is tough to substantiate such wild speculation though. You know how rumors go.

Paul, that was a good read. At the same time, it did seem like these guys are so boring you had a hard time really getting color from them. And that's a bad thing, considering they're dressed up in costumes and shit.

By overall, I'm a geek at heart and I was highly entertained. I just felt kinda depressed after reading it. lol.
