Over There

posted by on May 27 at 15:17 PM

I don’t know what it means that I had to read a gay blog written on the other end of the continent to find a YouTube video originally linked at a gay sports blog about a totally straight sports event that happened this weekend in Spokane, Washington. But here it is:

The Spokane Chiefs—never heard of ‘em—of the Western Hockey League—never heard of it—won the championship this weekend, taking the 2008 Memorial Cup. They’re the first American team to win the championship since 1998, according to OutSports.com, and it’s the Chiefs first championship since 1991. And there was a tragic mishap during the presentation of the trophy…

Never heard of them?

Growing up, Spokane was the big city for my family.

How could you not have heard of them ...

Ya gotta root for the "local" kids (that's the Seattle Thunderbirds, Dan) but...

I'm always pleased to cheer for Moose Jaw, Kelowna and Saskatoon.

I know it's the hip thing to hate sports, but the Seattle Thunderbirds play in the WHL at Key Arena. (Also, Everett has a team.)

Up here, the Vancouver Giants are far more entertaining to watch than the (NHL) Vancouver Canucks--and you can get good seats at playoff games for $15. Great way to spend a night with some friends and some beers.

I can't bear to stand the repeating.....

I'm over conditioned to believe that there is too much, far too much fakery on you tuuuuuuuuube to believe that it might not end in mystery substance all over some ones face.

@ 3, 4 - pretty sure they just moved to Kent

@ 4 - which probably says more about the Canucks than the Giants. Although I imagine watching Lucic in the minors was pretty sweet.

@6 - The move to Kent will probably occur at the beginning of 2009, when the new arena is scheduled to be completed.

@4 - There are in fact a handful of Sloggers (and staffers) that don't hate sports!

@ everyone: yes, they're moving to Kent, though they'll still be called the SEATTLE Thunderbirds. Kelowna, however, stole Tacoma's old WHL team, making it the Oklahoma City of the WHL. So there's no reason to cheer for them.

@ Dan: you need to get out more. The T-Birds have been playing in Seattle (in one incarnation or another) for over a quarter century.

These WHL kids are mostly, what, 16-18 years old? With a fuck-up like that, you just send 'em to their rooms to think about what they did.

yes, most of the team is made up of canadians that go to high school in spokane so they can play in the league which is basically the minors for NHL.

went to many a chiefs game as a kid and loved them! especially blowing those long silly plastic horns and ringing cow bells.

ah hocky!

Minor league hockey at the Key is a frickin' blast. You should go, Dan. If you get a group you can sit in one of the pens right behind the glass at one of the ends and watch teenagers crash into each other at 60 mph from just a fraction of an inch away.

The cup that broke was actually a replica - would you trust 17 year olds with something like that? The real thing is in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Surely this is a metaphor for the Iraq War...

That was tragic? I expceted someone to slip and slice open his teammate's neck or something. A $28 trophy cracking in half is funny, but tragic.

OH! You're being IRONIC, aren't you?

I agree with banjoeboy; why the fuck was this on gay websites? there's nothing gay about it. I just wasted precious moments of my life watching that and expecting to see some hot hockey ass at the very least...

That shows why we shouldn't let you Americans win hockey trophies. . .
