They have fresh veggi's?
Ok, the line about HRC and OJ is vile and offensive, yes, but how exactly is it sexist?
Really? I didn't know that Muslims ate bananas.
Erica, you will never get your priorities straight. If I were news editor at the Stranger I'd be interviewing women at Ft. Lewis and McChord about rape and not wasting my time with chickenshit reader boards and t-shirts.
Is it just me or does Erica need laid?
It's strange too because everybody should know that the monkey symbology is usually reserved for Dubya.
I never realized just how much Obama looks like Curious George. It's uncanny.
This Mulligan is a disgrace to the Irish!
sorry Erica, wanting a woman dead doean't mean that the person is sexist. Each time that a claim of sexism is thrown out there incorrectly (especially from a female reporter) it weakens the true charges of sexism that still need to be overcome.
Journalists have to quantify everything. That's how they remain objective. The list serve-hounding bloggers just come out and say what they think is right (not that you're wrong on this issue).
That's the magic of this whole Internet thing. You can 'page the objective media' without actually having to communicate with anyone. I like both methods, personally.
I'm beginning to not like you again. I was hoping your new workload would somehow pipe you down, but it seems to have taken a completely different turn.
You're becoming almost as annoying as I am. Have fun with that.
#9 is the winner.
But the Stranger does what the rest of the media does: blows all things out of proportion. But at least they do not choke us with sappy mindless human interest stories. For that we can watch the elderly blonde chick on King 5 News for !!!
The second sign is not saying that Hillary is somehow unfit, or incompetent due to her sex, ECB.
It's simply wishing her a gruesome, bloody death.
Jeez, Erica, you should have heard my 80-year-old (but still compos mentis) mother the other day in the restaurant, ranting that she'd like to kill Hillary. I thought we were going to have to tape her mouth shut before the Secret Service came rappelling down the wall.
wow, and Erica pulled my post which politely pointed out how it wasn't sexist and she is doing a disservice to actual problems being caused by sexism
good job!, go reporter go!!!
The shirt plays on racial stereotypes, but more importantly also reminds us of who he will be replacing.
whoops!, there it is, stupid reload button :P
I'm also mystified about the sexism. If this (tasteless) sign betrays anti-woman sentiment, would a sign that said "Why couldn't George Bush have married Lizzie Borden" be anti-male?
Or am I putting too much thought into this? Sometimes I think ECB could look at three Rorschachs and say "sexist! sexist! sexist!"?
I agree with 9 and 13 - the Mulligan's sign is vile, crude and mean-spirited, but simply wishing she was dead is not, in and of itself, sexist.
Curious George does not appear to have lips, which is both terrifying, and a clue that if these were supposed to be a throwback to ape-themed racial cartoons (like the kind they still have in Holland depicting black peet and Sinterklaus)then they totally did a half-assed job.
In a related story, the man in the yellow hat hates the Chinese. And irony.
Given that domestic violence is a kind of misogyny, and that in invoking OJ specifically this sign is advocating domestic violence, I am surprised that so many commenters here are so quick to say this isn't sexism.
What Wurm @9 said. Erica, you are a talented reporter whose credibility has been badly damaged by a series of fallacious and rabidly partisan anti-anti-Hillary posts. By persisting with the idea that any attack on Hillary is ipso facto sexist, you risk making the damage permanent, but not only to your own reputation. Anti-feminist ideologues will begin using your more egregious positions as rallying cries, just as you now seize on extremist gaffes to tar your opponents as a group.
Just like Dems who advocate fighting right-wingers with their own dirty tactics, you are damaging the very cause you so passionately fight for.
The best thing about that billboard is how the "I" statement is sandwiched between the two descriptions of the bars goods and services. Priceless.
Why is OJ's innocence continually mocked?
Why can you only get fresh veggies three hours out of the day?
@24, racism is why, racism. Or reverse sexism? I honestly am not sure which it is with Erica.
Hey, it would be better then OJ marrying a man. And if Hillary and OJ WERE married, I bet Mulligan would be happy to give them free veggies, between 11 and 2, of course.
sincerely,
diggum
Bad taste. Something were known around the world for.
the Real Killer is their CRAZZZY happy hour menu!
America is racist and sexist?
WTF?!?!?!
Quit yanking my chain!
@30,
I know. Next she'll say that it's homophobic.
That kind of sign is put out by the kind of people who believe that Hillary and Bill had Vincent Foster offed. Remember, there is a 15 year campaign from the right-wing (aided and abetted by the media and many left-wingers even) to demonize and vilify the Clintons.
God the South simply sucks ass. It's as if they revel in their stupidity. Fuckers will never change. One of the big reasons I left that god-forsaken part of the country
Lostboy @ 22:
Sorry, Erica is neither talented nor a reporter.
of course! this sign was produced by the vast right-wing conspiracy! from ken starr to skanky bar marquees, they've left no stone unturned. clever bastards. what will they think of next?
I think they call this "deflecting an attack on someone who can't figure out she's lost by whining about how mean people are in wanting you to stop helping Kaiser McCain and his Red Bushies".
Fresh veggies are always good.
But wash them first.
After fifteen years of reading about stupid anti-Hillary reader boards scattered through the deep South like Burma Shave signs, I really can't muster the outrage to tut-tut yet another.
In being misogynist, they promote miscegenation. How interesting. The South's cognitive dissonance shall RISE again!
Hating Hillary is not being sexist, it's being rational.
Expressing that hatred as a gruesome joke isn't being sexist, it's being tasteless.
Whining about other people hating Hillary and labeling it as sexism isn't being smart, interesting or correct. I'm sorry, but it's being pathetic. That's just the truth.
It's not news that there's sexism, but if you're going to write about it -- and please don't, because you and those like you have rendered the subject boring, if not irritating, while in service to Clinton, who deserves none of your respect or support -- how about using an actual, real example of it?
Thanks Slog. Wishing that a woman would have married a man so that he could abuse her, beat her, and kill her once she leaves him is not sexist. Greeeeeeeat. And Curious George is just a cute monkey.
The misogynists of Slog remind me of my grandparents, who couldn't seem to understand how the n-word was racist. Insulting a black person with the n-word isn't racist because you insult white people too, right Slog commenters?
I'm still waiting for my 2008 Misogynists of Slog Calendar to arrive.
poppy, when will you start having a relevant point to anything?
Poor, poor Erica. How do you get up each morning and face the vicious, cruel lot that is the fate of the professional victim? Why, it must be exhausting! And the toll of constantly being aggravated and aggrieved at every perceived slight & insult, no matter how tendentious or idiotic. You poor, poor, poor thing. It almost makes me feel bad for you! But then I remember that you actually have nothing better to do...
West Virginia was on the Union side in the Civil War, as was Indianna for that matter. While there is a lot of ignorance in the south, it certainly doesn't have a monopoly.
Of course hating on Hillary is not automatically sexist. And of course making a gruesome joke about her or anybody else is not automatically sexist. But certainly some gruesome jokes are sexist, right?
Surely we all agree that if this sign said "I wish Hillary were raped" then it that would be sexist, yes?
So when some of us see this sign, we see it as saying "I wish somebody killed Hillary." But others of us see this sign as saying "I wish Hillary were the victim of domestic abuse."
Can't people here at least allow that the latter reading of the sign is plausible too, so it's not absolutely crazy for ECB to see this as a sexist joke about domestic violence?
The sign doesn't surprise me, but I'm still with Ben @21 and Poppy @40. Or maybe there would also be nothing sexist about this: Too bad Hillary's dad wasn't Yazidi.
I wish Hillary had married O.J. too, because in an alternate universe O.J. would then be the president!
I am -
* Male
* NOT a Hillary fan - she was my fifth or sixth choice (Above Biden and Gravel)
*Annoyed by people looking for victimization everywhere they can find it.
* Instantly struck by the sexism in the sign. Why is it sexist?
- Because it reminds us that a women should be considered in terms of whom she married.
- Perpetuates the notion that domestic violence is funny. Like it or not, domestic violence is almost always about gender roles.
If the sign read: I wish Cheney woud invite Hillary on his next hunting trip" it would be vicious and violent, but not nearly so obviously sexist.
Ben, Ben, Ben. You are far too rational for the likes of Slog. Please stop. You'll upset the natives.
The anti-Hillary sign IS sexist, in that Nichole Simpson was the victim of sexist violence ( before her murder also). She was a battered spouse. Everyone focusing on O.J.'s presumed guilt or innocence seems to forget that.
I notice that the Mulligans sign also offers free meals to border patrol agents - a portion of whom are no better than racist vigilante thugs who relish enforcing racist immigration policies, terrorizing border communities in the U.S., and cavorting with white supremacists. Somehow I doubt the anti-Hillary sign has anything to do with Obama. Mulligan sounds like a likely McCain voter.
