What exactly is "modern" history? Do they only go back until the next most unpopular president so they have a story to write and use the word "most"?

And Pierce was arguably worse then Buchanan as he was the only incumbent president not nominated for reelection by his own party.
Yeah and by this time next year the media will be in spin mode so furious that reality itself will cease to exist.

Most Americans will not only believe that Caligutard was (still is??) the greatest leader in world history; they'll think he's the second coming of Jayzus!

Women and children will openly weep and flagellate themselves at the mere mention of his name, and grown men will throw themselves down on the ground in abject supplication to their moron god.

So it has been, and so it will be.

I am reminded of Leonid Brezhnev. You know him,one of the last Soviet Presidents. He had his country bogged down in Afghanistan.
He had a lousy economy. He spied on his citizens and had gulags. His people were desperate for change but got more of the same bloated old white man bull shit. Just saying.

History will be more forgiving of Bush, as it was for Truman - especially if Iraq eventually democratic stability. Jimmy Carter, however, gets worse in the minds of presidential historians because of missed opportunities and the high inflation/high interest rate misery index.

Still, 'W can take credit of having a higher approval rating than the democratically controlled Congress.

most of the modern political framework in this country was re-aligned during FDR's administration. changed buracracy, economic relations, plus superpower status in the wake of WWII. so it makes sense in a way to limit the scope to the post-war era.

I find it hard to believe that Bush is less popular than Hoover, that guy sucked hard.

though if your definition of modern is from the political theory standpoint then yes it probably started in the 1600s. however an Art history definition would probably begin in the late 19th early 20th century
